Hi I hope anyone can help I will be as factual as poss.

Tooth pain started November. Tooth that had a root canal done 2 years before. Gum swollen and bleeding and sore, intermittently.

January first week. Goes to emergency dental appt. x ray and told no sign of infection. Takes paracetamol and ibuprofen every day whilst whinging.

February. 15 -18 days ago pain becomes much worse. Can't go more then a few hours without pain relief.

3 days ago. Tooth so bad he's panting.

Last night. Went to dentaline. X rayed and gold infection in tooth. 24 hours of anti biotic later he is worse

Taking ibuprofen lysine x 2 caps and paracetamol and tramadol 100mg And he is literally in tears

I've since seen that the canal may need to be opened and re cleaned and set as the anti biotics would be ineffective.

To be clear he literally burnt his legs off in the summer and coped with paracetamol and was in the burns unit for dressing changes etc.

I'm so upset seeing him like this. He has had frozen peas on his head.

Aibu to ring dentaline again

Of course you must ring them.

cultkid · 21/02/2020 17:49

Would it be unreasonable to expect an improvement by now

I'm frustrated we paid them for last night plus anti biotics they were so rushed
The dentist has a bad rep in the area who was on call
I hope he isn't on call again tonight

Why have you not sorted it out during office hours with his normal dentist ?

apples24 · 21/02/2020 17:50

Of course, go for it. They will probably have to open it up, clean it, apply local meds etc before the pain resolves

cultkid · 21/02/2020 17:51

Does anyone know if the anti biotics could actually be effective for a basically sealed off tooth?

OP posts:
Fr0g · 21/02/2020 17:54

did you ask how long the antibiotics would take to start being effective?
I presume that whoever prescribed them has medical training- would rather rely on that than random google search.
Try 111 or out of hours GP service - or emergency dental service if you have one in your area

katy1213 · 21/02/2020 17:55

Three months - and he hasn't seen his own dentist?

cultkid · 21/02/2020 17:55

He said one dose should be an improvement

To answer the other question no appointments until April in the are HTH

Well antibiotics can take 48 hours to work, and the bacteria cell releases fluid so will be worse before it's better as it's getting more swollen. Co-codamol, frozen peas and ibuprofen. He needs a dentist appointment at his normal dentist when it's gone down, it's very difficult to anaethatise a tooth that is infected. Sounds like some nerve was left over from the root canal surgery.

cultkid · 21/02/2020 17:59

I think so yes that a tiny bit got left behind
I don't actually have any fillings so I don't know how it feels

I am going to make him go to a private dentist once he's finished the course of anti biotics and have it done again because I've had enough of listening to him moan as well

Going to call dentaline now

His dentist must offer emergency appointments though, surely? I'm sure the 'no appointments till April' thing is for people wanting routine appointments like check-ups or non-urgent fillings, etc., not someone in agony with a dental emergency.

cultkid · 21/02/2020 18:02

Well last time he got the emergency appointment the man said on the phone
"God I need to sit down, this never happens! An emergency appointment in your area"

I don't really care about the money now I just want him better. He spends loads of money on my health but is so mean with himself. I can't physically drag him there

I had exactly the same situation a few years back. Because of where the infection is, it can take a while for the antibiotics to penetrate.

I think I was initially started on penicillin but it didn't do the trick after several days. Then I was put on metronidazole. (Don't use mouthwash or whiskey soaked cotton for relief with that.)

Unfortunately the pain only stopped when the infection spread out of the root and swelled the side of my face and neck. Then it felt better but was bloody dangerous.

He spends loads of money on my health but is so mean with himself. I can't physically drag him there My husband can be a bit like that. I think that if you aren’t willing to seek medical help, you lose the right to complain about your pain. If he is that bad make him sort it himself.
