To buy this sofa with young kids in the house?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for considering buying this sofa for our new house. Apparently leather is a must and anything else will get trashed by grubby little mits (we have a one year old and another on the way).

I've had a look at leather sofas and they look/feel very bulky. Our living room isn't big so I'd like a sofa that you can see/vacuum underneath...just feels more spacious to me.

Thoughts?

You can get them cleaned, costs £60-£90 per sofa so just factor that in when buying it. We have a beige fabric sofa and 2 young kids. We have a no food or drink in the lounge (for the kids) rule but it still gets filthy from DH and I, we just get cleaned every other year so it looks nice again for a week before DH drops chocolate on it and I spill the wine.

scrivette · 20/02/2020 16:27

I think it would be fine, especially if you don't let them eat on it. It's dark so it will hide dirty marks, I can't see it being a problem.

buckeejit · 20/02/2020 16:27

Looks ok but the cushions already look misshapen & doesn't look great quality.

Mymycherrypie · 20/02/2020 16:31

I think it was obviously a joke. She said it was pristine underneath. I’d imagine if it really was trashed, it wouldn’t be pristine underneath. It’d have marks on it from before she put the cover on...

A cover wouldn’t even stop my mum anyway. She throws herself down on furniture and you can hear it creaking. It’s not like I can be strict with her about her weight!

TSSDNCOP · 20/02/2020 16:31

Your face probably has more sag from pursing your lips than my sofa does from having a cover on it

What a nasty spiteful personal comment.

KatharinaRosalie · 20/02/2020 16:33

U to buy a sofa without fully removable and washable covers. I hate leather as well, and our previous sofa was similar to the one you linked. Covers not washable. Despite steam and other cleaning, it looked horrid.

Now have an IKEA sofa, all covers removable, have been washed numerous times, sofa looks like new.

Mymycherrypie · 20/02/2020 16:39

TSSDNCOP Made after it had been implied the poster needed a cover on her sofa because she wasn’t strict enough. There are pages and pages of people having issues with spills, it’s not always lack of discipline. I often think MNers must have wrinkles from the amount of brow furrowing they do at each other!

princesspeppax · 20/02/2020 16:42

we have bought one very very similar from dfs, its due to be delivered on Thursday. We have 2 dc's under 5 and another on the way and i'm not worried, we paid extra for insurance on it and they are covering it with some sort of protective spray (cant remember the name of it)

Mymycherrypie · 20/02/2020 16:42

KatharinaRosalie What sofa do you have from Ikea? I wanted the blue velvet one but was worried how the cushions would hold up. How is it?

TSSDNCOP · 20/02/2020 16:43

That’s a really disproportionate response and I’m surprised you’d endorse it Cherry

I also made a similar remark about food/drinks and children. It’s not actually unreasonable.

WhereAreTheAdults · 20/02/2020 16:45

You can get sofas from John Lewis with an "Aqua Clean" material - basically you can sponge pretty much anything off. I am about to order one.....John Lewis Bailey, Highback in Aquaclean Wilton Steel if anyone is interested www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-bailey-high-back-large-3-seater-sofa/p3911849?fabricSku=234757659

I had been looking at that very DFS one but was scared away by the dreadful DFS reviews.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 20/02/2020 16:46

Leather sofas don’t have to look bulky or feel sticky. I’ve git a pair of Stressless leather sofas and they’re lovely. Modern lines, not the overstuffed style. They are cool in summer and warm in winter, and have held up really well for 10 years so far.

Mymycherrypie · 20/02/2020 16:49

TSSDNCOP I think yours sounded less accusatory and wasn’t personally addressed to anyone. That was the difference.

TSSDNCOP · 20/02/2020 16:58

I maintain that it is a personal and spiteful comment, and frankly indefensible. I’ve reported.

Mummyshark2018 · 20/02/2020 17:03

We got the zinc sofa from DFS (french connection range also) which is very comfy and nicer than the one you've posted. We have one dc and a ddog. Had leather for years but wanted a teal sofa and can't get it in leather. We have throws over it which we just remove if we have guests over. Works fine. We also got the stain projection.

LesLavandes · 20/02/2020 17:04

OP. Make rules. Sit on the floor if your eating and only water on sofa! Wash hands before settling down. It's not too difficult and a nice throw is a good idea.

LesLavandes · 20/02/2020 17:05

You're not your for the grammar drama queens

Bringringbring · 20/02/2020 17:23

Thank you @TSSDNCOP

Really not bothered though. Made me chuckle how someone could get quite so het up about someone simply suggesting encouraging children to have respect for furniture may mean she’s not “really sad” about her sofa!

Bringringbring · 20/02/2020 17:24

Oh but mumsnet agreed with you that it was unacceptable!

Yabadee · 20/02/2020 17:25

I think I have this soda! And the matching chair and footstool. Similar anyway, I’ve attached a pic.

We have a 4 year old DD, sofa is fine. We don’t eat in the living room tho, always at the table. Or she’ll sit at her desk!

The cleaning kit is worth getting, the few marks I’ve had on it have come out using that (the delivery guys gave us it for free!)

One thing to watch, the legs are very slidy so even with the grips (that the delivery guys also gave us for nothing btw) it slides about the floor when you sit on it, if you don’t have carpet. We put extra rubber grips on but they fall off 🙈

I love it tbf. Really wanted the teal one but DP put his foot down!

I currently have a leather sofa and leather chair, different makes, and I hate the bloody things. The cushions are attached so every thing that makes it’s way down the sides is a nightmare to fish back out. Plus the previous cold in the winter/sticky in summer reasons.

Washable covers are definitely the way to go plus you can always replace the foam cushion inserts if they take a particular beasting.

silencebeforethebleeps · 20/02/2020 17:34

When I was little, my parents had an antique velvet sofa, and behind it a windowsill full of glass ornaments. They just told me off a lot. I still don't dare to move when I visit their house. Actually I am over-cautious wherever I go, well trained you see.

Mymycherrypie · 20/02/2020 17:34

My friend has that one Yabbadee. She’s had it a long time and it has aged really well. Lots of spills including coffee and there are no marks at all, and the cushions have kept their shape.

FWIW, I think judging someone’s parenting by how marked their sofa is, is unfair. Which is why I’ve stuck up for the poster. The comment was OTT yes but so is giving unasked for discipline advice. Even the best parent in the world has the potential to have a marked sofa!

peanutbuttermarmite · 20/02/2020 17:38

I prefer my dc to relax at home - plenty of rules outside the house. Perhaps that’s why I’ve a sofa cleaner on speed dial!

Drpeppered · 20/02/2020 17:39

Is it the Zinc? We have that one and it’s so comfortable! You can also pay a bit extra to cover stains/spillage damage I think.
