To think you clean your teeth AFTER dinner

How can I get DH out of his habit of cleaning his teeth before he eats dinner? He doesn't then clean again before bed! I have pointed out why this is not a good idea but he won't change!!

Well I mean it's his choice obviously but it is an odd one to make, it seems like he doesn't get the idea of teeth brushing Grin

Labbage · 20/02/2020 11:56

Eurgh, so he goes to bed after dinner without cleaning his teeth? That's grim.

Floss or use an inter dental brush, see how much gets trapped after eating. If that doesn't make him brush before bed I don't know what will.

GreasyFryUp · 20/02/2020 11:56

I don't know anyone that brushes their teeth after dinner. But it's actually a good idea to brush before eating. If you remove plaque before eating it prevents it further attacking the teeth as you eat more food.

If he's brushing three times a day that's pretty good.

Do you mean you don't know anyone who brushes their teeth between dinner and bed? Confused

jane1956 · 20/02/2020 12:01

hope he doesn't have garlic for dinner (morning breath!!!!)

Labbage · 20/02/2020 12:03

I used to have a lot of teeth issues. Now I brush after eating and floss and use interdental brushes.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/02/2020 12:09

I don't know anyone that brushes their teeth after dinner.

I think the issue is he doesn't brush before bed but brushes before having his dinner, then eats a load of food and goes to bed

MidsomerMum · 20/02/2020 12:15

Brushing before dinner is fine and actually pretty healthy.

Only brushing before dinner must mean he wakes up feeling pretty grim and thirsty!

bengalcat · 20/02/2020 12:17

I have no problem with brushing before dinner but would definitely expect someone to brush again before bed - certainly wouldn’t kiss someone who hadn’t .

Frariedeamin · 20/02/2020 12:20

My dentist specifically advised me not to brush for a few hours after eating. The increased levels of acid in your mouth can erode your enamel quicker.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 20/02/2020 12:22

Maybe your cooking is so awful he needs it to taste minty 😂😂

But in all seriousness just leave him to it, they are his teeth and his an adult.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 12:24

My dentist said not to brush just after you eat (rinse/floss to get rid of bits) but always brush before breakfast and before you go to bed!

PeterPanGoesWrong · 20/02/2020 12:42

Whilst I agree he has a, shall we say unique outlook. Let’s not forget, he is a fully grown adult capable of making his own life choices.
Don’t sweat the small stuff, and someone else’s choices are not yours to worry about.

theoriginalmadambee · 20/02/2020 12:50

Never heard of this habit. He's grown, so whatever rocks his boat.

But I would be quite insulted that he would ruin the taste of any dinner i had cooked. Perhaps start every meal with a glass of juice that should teach him Grin. Errh and not much kissing with potential old leftover dinner still there.

LizzieBananas · 20/02/2020 12:52

You shouldn’t brush (too soon) after food. It wears down the enamel and lets food and bacteria in.

quirrels · 20/02/2020 12:53

I brush when I get up, then after each meal and again at bedtime. So five times a day. The first at last will just be a freshen up but the after meal ones are to remove food residue.

RandomLondoner · 20/02/2020 12:57

When I was a child, we were told to brush after every meal. DD has been told to brush her teeth before breakfast by her other parent. This seemed nuts to me, but when I googled, it looked like this might be what is advised these days.

VenusOfWillendorf · 20/02/2020 12:57

Brushing before dinner is fine - I usually brush before breakfast, which I guess is kind-of the same.

But not brushing before bed at night isn't very hygienic.

opticaldelusion · 20/02/2020 13:44

Hygienist here. Brush first thing in the morning before eating and last thing at night. Don't brush straight after meals or more than twice a day. And floss!
