6yr old child given medication without parental consent

Skippy21 · 20/02/2020 08:28

After collecting my two children 11yrs and 6yrs old from a half term holiday workshop they both were happy and excited about their outdoor fun that day despite small injuries- 6yr old had a tumble and hurt his ankle. No real issues there until my 11yr old daughter said the man looking after them gave Jack (6 yr old) ‘a tablet’ 😮😮, as he had hurt his ankle and was in considerable pain crying a lot. I was utterly beside myself with shock that this would happen- Jack was given an Ibuprofen tablet -adult!! Medication- no phone call to me and no authority to administer any form of medication. Jack is ok, and dosage was within his weight range- just. The man has been suspended from his position ( guy in charge had no idea this incident had occurred!!).
Should this be reported to police?

@justaboy the OP says the following:

The company are not authorised to give any medication whatsoever and my consent was not given.

rwalker · 20/02/2020 21:14

Sorry forgot that your replies have to be crystal clear as people love to pick at them.
No where did I say it was right
But the common sense approach I mean was how to deal with it go in and talk to them and get your concerns followed up dealt with.

winterchills · 20/02/2020 21:30

The man was trying to help your son who was crying in pain. Yes he shouldn't have given him the tablet and can see why your concerned BUT phoning the police is very extreme and inappropriate

Waveysnail · 20/02/2020 21:32

Not a police matter at all. The man has been suspended to obviously they have taken correct steps. What type of club was it? Did you fill in medical forms

Darbs76 · 20/02/2020 21:35

No I absolutely wouldn’t even consider wasting the polices time with this. It sounds like the company are taking it seriously by suspending him. I assume they are investigating and will provide you with a report of that in due course. I understand you’re upset, but at the end of the day thankfully no-one was hurt and actions been taken

Bouledeneige · 20/02/2020 22:33

So you actually want this man to be arrested?

Cherrysoup · 20/02/2020 22:39

Police? Dear god, what is the crime? Do you really think the police would investigate this? The guy is-rightly-suspended. I doubt the CPS would be pursuing this as a prosecutable crime. Hmm

dizzycatdance2 Ibuprofen has aspirin

It absolutely does not. @dizzycatdance2, I'm bringing this to your attention so that you hopefully stop posting online as if you're an expert. Ibuprofen and aspirin are different medications, yes. Both NSAIDs, yes.

One of the most dangerous things about the internet is people with very little knowledge posting as if they know what they are talking about

Aragog · 21/02/2020 03:13

What do you expect the police to do?

Re OFSTED - at most they'll contact the organisation and find out what is happening. They'll discover the man in question has been suspended subject to an investigation, which will probably lead to policies being changed and tightened. So what more will they do? Most likely nothing.

Whilst a safeguarding error has occurred the reality is that the company have done what they need to do so far.

heartsonacake · 21/02/2020 03:33

Wow. YABVU and have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Ibuprofen and aspirin are two separate drugs, and it would not have been an overdose if it had been paracetamol instead.

If you leave your child in the care of someone else and they are trying to do their best for them, I think it’s awful that you complained and got him fired, and even more so that you think the police would be at all interested. No crime has been committed.

If you don’t want people to take care of your child when they are hurt or sick then don’t dump them on someone else.

Firstawake · 21/02/2020 06:37

Mssmith501.
And what if the child had been given medication that morning at home and the worker now overdosed him.
What if the child was allergic to meds.
I don't think the parents reaction was crap, it is a case of child protection for her child and others.

Huggybear16 · 21/02/2020 07:02

NHS policy re administration of medicine in schools and early years settings

Why did you post this policy? OPs child was neither in a school nor in an early years setting when the medicine was administered.

Should this be reported to police?
I would. Ibuprofen is a well known gateway drug.

I'm pretty sure that @justdeckingthehalls1 was being sarcastic @JKScot4. I thought it was funny.Grin

Shaminon · 21/02/2020 07:07

It's not great.

It's not a police matter.

Double check the child care you use that all adults are first aid trained with relevant qualifications.

hazeyjane · 21/02/2020 07:48

I don't know about the police, but Its not an over reaction to have complained.

I'm allergic to ibuprofen, and it is often not recommended for some other conditions e.g. ds can't have it due to stomach difficulties.

I am really surprised they didn't have protocol in place to alert them to medications/allergies/health conditions. I thought this was standard in every activity.

Guavaf1sh · 21/02/2020 07:52

YABU. This is why we can’t have nice things

dementedpixie · 21/02/2020 07:55

YABU. This is why we can’t have nice things

Eh?? How has this stopped anyone having nice things? He shouldn't have given random OTC drugs to a small child without consent

hazeyjane · 21/02/2020 07:57

I really don't get the people berating the op for complaining!

Supertrooper98 · 21/02/2020 08:05

People aren't berating her for complaining. She was right to do that. People are berating her for talking about going to the police about this! Going to the police because someone gave her child an ibuprofen Confused

PurpleDaisies · 21/02/2020 08:07

People aren't berating her for complaining.

Some posters on this thread have done this.

dementedpixie · 21/02/2020 08:09

I'm sure OP has got the message that it wont be a police matter. She is rightfully angry about her son being giving adult medication without permission. Do we even know it was ibuprofen? Was it from his own personal stash?

FamilyOfAliens · 21/02/2020 08:13

The OP is gone, people.

As is usually the case on threads like this.

hazeyjane · 21/02/2020 08:14

Supertrooper98 loads of people are on here berating her for complaining. Most agree police is too far, but others are saying the guy acted appropriately etc

FamilyOfAliens · 21/02/2020 08:15

others are saying the guy acted appropriately

Have they? I think some posters have said he was trying to help. Haven’t seen anyone post they thought he acted appropriately.

PurpleDaisies · 21/02/2020 08:21

You need to go back and read the thread more carefully, family.
