To not tell insurance about prang?

I reversed my car into a small wall on my own property and put a nice dent in my car and knocked a bit of my wall over. Idiot I know. Long story. It happens.

I didn’t want to loose my no claims bonus on both house and car so paid for it all to be fixed out of my own pocket. No big deal but I’m now several hundred pounds lighter (way more than I thought it would cost).

DH now insists I have to declare it to my insurance company anyway. AIBU to think I don’t?

YANBU - don’t need to tell
YABU - tell

I don't think you have to tell them so long as you aren't making a claim. And obviously, you don't need to report it to the police, because no one else was involved.

FlapAttack23 · 19/02/2020 21:59

I don’t think you need to tell but I might be wrong 😂🤷‍♀️

Tyrannosaurusdrip · 19/02/2020 22:06

You don't need to tell them. Problem is fixed and no claim made.

AJPTaylor · 19/02/2020 22:15

Don't tell them. Seriously.

Amicompletelyinsane · 19/02/2020 22:17

If you were to tell them you may as well have gone through the insurance. As once they know they will put your premiums up next year. Don't tell them!

TheQueef · 19/02/2020 22:18

They tend to specifically ask if you have suffered ANY loss in the last five years regardless if you claimed or not, insured or uninsured.
So you should tell them.

Not saying I would.

LtJudyHopps · 19/02/2020 22:22

Why on earth would you need to?
Someone broke in to my car and ripped the lock out. I rang my insurance to find out how much it would cost to repair, they told me. I said no worries never mind and had it done myself. I never made a claim but they recorded it as one, so my renewal doubled (!!) in price and I went elsewhere. They have kept it on record as I tried to go back with them this year and when I rang them, they upped the price of the online quote because of it.
All for something I didn’t claim for. So no, don’t tell them!

TheQueef · 19/02/2020 22:25

Some bollicks about statistics, if you crash you are more likely to crash again and thieves returning.

I also question what my marital status has to do with my car insurance.

Load of rhubarb.

Rose789 · 19/02/2020 22:26

Don’t tell them- seriously don’t.
I work in insurance. It will be recorded on the database for 5 years and will affect your premiums. It won’t affect your no claims bonus however.
Technically yes the wording is any loss regardless of blame and whether or not the subject of an insurance claim. But in this circumstance and the repairs have been carried out it’s not relevant.

Witchend · 19/02/2020 22:28

We told them about a small prang and it made no difference.

happinessischocolate · 19/02/2020 22:28

I would tell them if it had involved another car or you'd had to pay out for damage to someone's else's property, as then it would have been dodgy but your car and your wall nope.

If like me you didn't repair any bumps or scrapes, then would you think the insurance company needs to know?

GreenTulips · 19/02/2020 22:28

I also question what my marital status has to do with my car insurance

When I got married DH premium dropped by £40 and mine went up!!

Makes sense really!!!

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 19/02/2020 22:28

No you don't need to tell them. Why on earth would you unless you were claiming off your insurance? If anything, they will note it and it will go against you on renewal even tho you didn't claim from them.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 19/02/2020 22:52

There's no way I'd tell them. You paid your premiums and didn't claim so nothing to do with them. Anyway, there's no way they'll ever find out, it's just an excuse to bump up the premiums

Brabble · 19/02/2020 23:26

I work in insurance, when you take out a policy they ask have you had any claims of accidents in the last 5 years regardless of blame and whether or not subject to an insurance claim, so yes you need to tell them it’ll go as notification only and shouldn’t affect the premium

marashino · 19/02/2020 23:45

You need to tell them when you renew, they ask for any accident whether you claimed or not.

marashino · 19/02/2020 23:48

Think carefully if you are with Liverpool Victoria, somebody hit my car in a car park, I saw them do it and they admitted liability but LV tried to nearly double my premium the next year. We parted company after that and they lost my business for three policies.
