In thinking 36 is too old

To graduate?

If I continue to do what I want to do, career wise I won’t graduate until I’m 36.

I can’t help but think this is too old?
Are you ever too old?
Will I manage to be taken seriously in a career as a beginner at 36?

Made a radical career change and moved abroad at 36. Best idea I ever had. You can do it!

ClementineWardobe · 21/02/2020 08:28

You're going to be 36 anyway, so be 36 with a degree, rather than 36 without one.

I have an OU degree, it's my stock response to this question - and I've got friends who went ahead because of this reply.... 💐

I think your age and experience are a boon in social work. Too often I've been chatting to a young social worker who had a charmed life and saw their role and trying to encourage other people to live well like them. So patronising. On the flip side, my uncle who had a terrible start in life retrained as a social worker in his 30s and brings so much empathy and understanding to his role. Congratulations on choosing such a worth while career and good luck xx

Im 38 and just planning to retrain in my dream profession so nope never to old.

Truth is until I was 30 I worked hard at good soul draining jobs then quit to raise my kids, while volunteering during school hours I found what I love doing at last! So I've decided to get learning while the kids are learning. You are never too old to follow a dream :)

St3v3 · 21/02/2020 12:21

You are not too old. I have just started an access course with Open University for my own reasons and I am 63. Never stop learning, it is never wasted.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 21/02/2020 12:48

I chose to come back to Uni at 38 so I hope 36 isnt too old 😂
I wont be fully qualified til 42 but I am perservering

Toomuchtrouble4me · 21/02/2020 12:59

Depends on the career, yes, possibly.

hoochymamgu · 21/02/2020 13:13

Great thread Smile
Your never too old
@Jellybeansincognito,
I did an MA in social work when I was 50, changed career from teaching.
It's been amazing, I love my job Grin

JocastaElastic · 21/02/2020 14:49

Are you dead yet? If you’re not dead yet then you’re not too old.

FelicisNox · 21/02/2020 15:35

Don't be ridiculous.

36 is still young. I'm 42 this year and am considering a 3 year degree.

Littlefiendsusan · 21/02/2020 16:04

I love this thread and think itshould be nominated for classics.

murakamilove · 21/02/2020 18:28

Good grief - no!
Don’t ever think any age is too old!
Knew a wonderful lady who learnt 3 different languages in her 90s - not likely to travel - just ‘because...!’
Go for it!

DreamTheMoors · 22/02/2020 17:51

You’ll be 36 whether you graduate or not.
So graduate!

mrscolonelbrandon · 23/02/2020 00:29

I got my degree just short of my 50th and retrained and moved jobs it’s never too late ! go for it ! Good luck x
