AIBU to use my new (old) plates?

As a disclaimer this is really not a major issue and very "first world"!

We needed new dinner plates as ours were knackered so as is usual for me I went to the local charity shop. There was one set that looked slightly antique which I loved as we have an old house - we got 7 dinner plates and 4 side plates for £5.

I got home and had a look at them properly and did a bit of on-line research and turns out they are art deco and probably worth a bit of money. I would still like to use them as I love them. The DC think I should sell them but then I would feel obliged to give the money back to the charity. DH thinks we should continue to use them but not for every day and that we definitely should not be dishwashering them (which I think is probably right).

WWYD?

Use them and love them!!

Surfer25 · 18/02/2020 19:09

Make a decision yourself?!

PartTimeEverything · 18/02/2020 19:09

I agree with your dh, but I would use them at least once a week

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/02/2020 19:11

Use them, they are plates.

Even if you sell them keep the money, the charity had plenty of time to check if they were of any value.

ozymandiusking · 18/02/2020 19:11

Whatever you decide, don't put them in the dishwasher. That will ruin them.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 18/02/2020 19:12

Depends what they are actually worth.
You have already given money to the charity to buy the plates.

Lllot5 · 18/02/2020 19:14

Any chance of a photo?
I would keep them for ‘best’ and no dishwasher.

Allinadaystwerk · 18/02/2020 19:15

I've done the same thing and I use them daily. They are a lovely colour and make me happy. Life s too short to save things for best

CopperMugs · 18/02/2020 19:17

Just use them.

I buy a lot from charity to resell. But if it's something I love, I keep it, regardless of potential profit.

Life is too short to have ugly crockery

Wonkybanana · 18/02/2020 19:18

Definitely not the dishwasher!!

But otherwise, I'd say use them as often as you like - every day if you want. They will always give you pleasure for as long as they last.

The trouble with saving them 'for best' is that they end up never being used properly, and where's the fun in that? They won't make you happy sitting on a shelf.

Does that give you a picture? My technical know-how is limited.

OK, they are out of the dishwasher and lovingly washed by hand!

They are not worth hundreds of pounds but probably over 10 times what I paid for them.

I have a full set of these with tureens and sorry but they are not worth very much a whole set is only worth about £30 art deco dinner sets are so out of fashion nowadays, I use mine for best and definitely do not dishwasher them

Wonkybanana · 18/02/2020 19:26

We should get together OP! I have four egg cups in the same pattern, and a plate with four circular indentations to present the egg cups on!

Allinadaystwerk · 18/02/2020 19:28

They are nice. Definitely every day plates too

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/02/2020 19:32

Nice, they would make me happy. I may have a wander around the shops soon.

Flippetydip · 18/02/2020 20:15

Excellent - delighted then that they are not worth so much money - I will continue to use for everyday. I LOVE the sound of the eggcups - I will have to keep an eye for those.

And yes, they do make me happy - tragic isn't it?!
