Gallstone Consultation

Sorry to be posting for traffic but I was just looking for others to share their experiences and ask some advice.

So after waiting 2 years and having 2/3 attacks a week, I finally have a consultation at the hospital next week. I'm just so worried the doctor is going to refuse me surgery. Will they do this? What's your experience?

It seems so silly but I'm so worried about this consultation. I've never really had any health issues before so don't know what to expect.

Hey, I had my gallbladder taken out 3 years ago this july. Have they already confirmed stones? I also work for w private hospital (however had surgery via nhs) so know the expectations of consultations. You will basically just discuss what's been happening and be referred for the surgery if that is what u want and told recovery times, ect and any questions u have during the consultation x

FeedMeChoc · 17/02/2020 21:53

They won’t refuse you surgery if you’re honest and having so many attacks x

mumtobhoyandghirl · 17/02/2020 21:54

Also it was the best thing I ever done having mines removed x

LunasOrchid · 18/02/2020 02:29

Thank you! That's made me feel so much better now. Yes confirmed via ultrasound 2 years ago. I can't believe something is finally being done about it.. And yes I'm awake now due to another attack.

That's terrible that you've been waiting so long. I remember it well, it's horrific. Had mine out 2 years ago, really is life changing

LunasOrchid · 18/02/2020 02:32

Did you gain any weight after the surgery if you dont mine me asking? That's a big concern for me.

I had a patient yesterday have their GB removed without proper stones ... something called microlithiasis

BouleBaker · 18/02/2020 07:43

I didn’t gain weight after mine. Best thing that they’ve ever done!

FeedMeChoc · 18/02/2020 07:49

I gained weight but I needed to. I lost 3.5 stone due to my diet restriction with gallstones and was underweight.

You won’t gain weight if you don’t overeat.

I had gallstones whilst I was pregnant and it was honestly the worst pain I’ve ever felt. No one picked up on it and I got told by my midwife that it was most likely to be back pain as that can be quite horrendous in pregnancy. It was that painful that it affected how I went into natural labour mentally.. I went in to hospital thinking if that back pain is so so painful that i want to die, I’m not going to survive labour, so I lay down on the bed and I held onto gas and air till the pushing stage, I was so tired by that point and because my waters had gone nearly 24 hours before they had to intervene and do a EMCS.

4 weeks postpartum whilst recovering from the section I had another attack, I had lost another stone (I had already lost weight in my pregnancy, I basically weighed less at the end than I did at the beginning) and I came out with jaundice.

They did an MRI and found lots of little stones, they told me some people choose to have surgery and some people choose to live with them if they can stomach it. I choose surgery and within 8 months they had done the surgery, I instantly felt like a weight had been lifted, all the pressure around my back eased off and I wasn’t scared of food anymore Grin

I can't wait now! Thank you everyone!

I never gained any weight at all either x

Glitteryone · 19/02/2020 23:08

I got mine removed 7 months ago.... Best thin I ever got done. The attacks I had prior to the operation were horrendous!

Alsohuman · 19/02/2020 23:14

The pain’s dreadful, isn’t it? I had mine out nine years ago and it was such a relief to be shot of it. The scar’s tiny with keyhole and you should be out the same day. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can go back to work in less than two weeks, though.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 19/02/2020 23:19

I didn't have a consultation with the surgeon. The GP referred me for a scan, I went back to see her and she referred me for surgery.

AHobbyaweek · 19/02/2020 23:23

I had mine removed privately because the wait was so long in the NHS and it was the best thing I have done.

84claire84 · 19/02/2020 23:27

Best thing ever getting rid of the horrible thing.

No weight gain either.

I had mine removed within 2 weeks of first attack. However I was hospitalised and had that many stones they overflowed into my liver.

Good luck op. Please go with the attitude that your not leaving without having it agreed to be removed.

brittabot · 19/02/2020 23:43

I was having paralysing attacks a year after having my son. I contacted PALs and was seen swiftly after (I said I hadn’t been seen, and pointed out my blood and liver results were adversely affected.)

gingergiraffe · 20/02/2020 09:06

I had mine out about three years ago. I had polyps in the wall of my gall bladder. I said I was prepared to have a last minute op if anyone from the list cancelled as there was a waiting list and also I had to have toe nail surgery. Apparently they don’t like to operate within six months of another operation. In the end, when I rang to ask how far down the list I was, they offered me a ‘catch up’ day over the weekend, when there was assurance that it would not be cancelled due to other emergencies taking priority. Keyhole. It went well. As others have said, rest afterwards. My husband insisted I did nothing for a week and took it easy for the second week. I was able to eat normally immediately afterwards. I hope you soon get the op and that you too recover quickly. Life changing!
