Any advice gratefully received and feel free to explain it as if you're talking to a toddler! I'm in my, ahem, 50's with a teenager and have come to the realisation the world and music has moved on and I got left behind!

Basically, I have a huge Technics stacking system with BIG speakers to match - I never use it, it takes up a lot of space, the turntable lid is cracked/broken so I was thinking of selling it - although having just brought it back in from the shed to test it before putting on Ebay the sound quality is actually very good. I never use the turntable (the records are under my bed and I was thinking these can either go in the loft or sell although I may keep some for sentimental reasons. However obviously if I get rid of the record player how would I then ever listen to them then!! The double cassette deck on the stereo is obsolete!

I also have a Grundig Ovation 2 CD player (in the lounge) which I use from time to time - it's quite compact and I like using this to listen to CD's from time to time. The remote is a bit chewed (from when my daughter used it for teething!!)

I have a PURE Evoke 2 radio in the kitchen which I love (I mainly listen to Radio 4) however when I go upstairs I can't hear it anymore so miss parts of the programme so would like some speakers so I can still listen to the radio when I go upstairs but I'm not sure if those sort of speakers would work with this radio (it's quite old) or the smaller CD player?

iphone x - I listen to the radio (4) in the garden / gym and would like some music downloaded on it.

New car (well, new to me) with CD player which I was very pleased about however the sales rep didn't really see it as a usp and even commented "I'm surprised they still bother putting these in" Gave my friend a lift (she has the same car) and she said "I really love my car I can listen to all my music - it's great". I tentatively asked how she did this - apparently her music is on an SD card (just had a look and yes, there's a SD slot down there by the CD player I didn't even know it had!) She said she downloaded the music onto it from her laptop.

Laptop - I have no music on there - it's a HP Pavillion. It has a SD slot.

I do have Amazon Prime (mainly for Prime delivery) and the occasional film so could get Prime music (they keep emailing me to say I have unused music benefits). £7.99 a month. Feel guilty having it though due to environment issues and have cancelled it a few times however it doesn't always cancel properly as it's on auto renew unless I ring them and get cross which isn't great.

I recently went to a party where people randomly shouted Alexa can you play.....(I felt like 100 years old) I really don't want to fall even more behind the times - I'm on a budget so can't afford to spend a fortune however any advice gratefully received. Sorry for the long post and if you read it all THANK YOU VERY MUCH XX

“Alexa, play me...(usually 90’s dance classics)

Or SoundCloud through my Alexa/car. We have a Sonos but never use it, DH thinks me some kind of heathen as I think it’s shit!

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/02/2020 19:38

Alexa in the house with Spotify, and I bluetooth my phone to the car stereo also using Spotify.

MaryBerrysBomberJacket · 17/02/2020 19:38

Spotify premium and then I use the Chromecast on the TV or the Google Nest or Nest Mini around the house. Spotify straight through the car as well.

JaceLancs · 17/02/2020 19:42

Spotify on my phone and iPad
Listen to in car via car sound system
At home connect to tv via Apple TV or a docking station with speaker
At work connect to PC or TV via chrome cast
I’m 55 btw

Valleychalet · 17/02/2020 19:44

Echo dot (Alexa) or my phone, both use Spotify. Sometimes we'll just put the radio on. I still have CDs for the car, most of my friends are in their 20s and 30s and half use phones to play music in the car via Bluetooth, half use CDs. You can pick up Amazon Echo Dots for £25 new the majority of the time. I personally prefer Spotify premium to amazon music

MondeoFan · 17/02/2020 19:44

Digital radio in kitchen

Sonos speaker used to play my phone through it but now I can't so need to use amazon music

Alexa in lounge

iPhone through car speakers through a little clever device I bought on eBay

I have Spotify on my laptop, tablet and phone, and I use a cable to connect the phone in the car for music.

anotherlittlechicken · 17/02/2020 19:46

Alexa dot in the house.

USB stick with 200-250 songs on it in the car. Smile

(I change the songs on the USB once every couple of weeks.)

Destinysdaughter · 17/02/2020 19:47

Spotify and Bluetooth speaker. And Shazam so I can find a song I like on TV or radio and instantly download it to my Spotify playlist!

Meme05 · 17/02/2020 19:48

Alexas (3) direct play Amazon Music or Spotify depending where I am in the house.
In the car Bluetooth the Spotify.

scaryteacher · 17/02/2020 19:50

We have a turntable, CD players, internet radio, Bose wave thingys and I also have my very old clock radio from when I was 10 (I am now 54). I have a couple of cassette players about as well (and the cassettes!).

In the car I have a radio and CD autochanger. I can get a lead and connect to an iPod, but can't be arsed.

My phone won't stream anything as it is a dumb phone.

Spotify through Amazon Echo Show at home, Spotify through my iPhone on my commute and Spotify through my car’s entertainment system. I also listen to digital radio through all of these.

Scbchl · 17/02/2020 19:52

Radio in car and work. Alexa to use radio and spotify at home. Spotify on phone in the gym with headphones. Music channels on tv in evening sometimes too if people round and not using alexa.

Redcrayons · 17/02/2020 19:52

I have family Spotify for me and the DCs. We have a Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen which I connect to my phone. My car also has Bluetooth and I can play music from my phone on it.

My DCs have Alexa devices and play music through that, I think it might be connected to Spotify but I don’t really know.

I’d quite like to have some kind of WiFi roaming so that if I go from the kitchen to the bathroom the music automatically follows me. I don’t really know how to achieve this (and I’m not that motivated to find out).

I haven’t bought any music in physical form for years.

TheQueenBeyondTheWall · 17/02/2020 19:55

Smooth fm on Alexa and apple
Music in Alexa and in the car

TheVanguardSix · 17/02/2020 19:56

Spotify Premium family account.
I listen to it through Alexa downstairs, my laptop, and on my phone.
I don't drive. I cycle and listen to nothing but the traffic. But DH drives and listens to Radio 4.

kenandbarbie · 17/02/2020 19:57

Alexa in the house with google play music I think). Old fashioned radio and cds in the car.

Madhairday · 17/02/2020 19:58

Spotify through the TV soundbar in the lounge so more of a surround sound, in the other rooms use Bluetooth speakers and echo dot.
In the car Spotify through Bluetooth.
Can't imagine going back to CDs and tapes!

PrincessSloth · 17/02/2020 19:58

Spotify Premium...

Through Bluetooth in the car
On the smart TV in the living room
Bluetooth to the shower speaker in the bathroom
Bluetooth through the bed Blush in the bedroom (we have one of those TV beds!)

Never use anything else!

Cherrysoup · 17/02/2020 19:59

Spotify (free with Vodafone contract) through car speakers-got a little plugin Bluetooth receiver so I can stream it via my phone-set up a Bluetooth connection between phone and receiver, it happens automatically eventually when you’ve turned on your Bluetooth on phone and device.

I really like being able to ask Google for any music and it just plays. You need to set up your voice recognition on your phone for this-ask your teen to show you how or google if you want to appear cool!

In the house, we stream through the TV’s sound bar or the mini speaker (teacup size) upstairs. Again, ask your phone to play (Hey google, play......) and it works if you’ve connected your phone to the speaker via a Bluetooth connection.

I’ve also got an iPod in the car for when I’m feeling nostalgic.

TreatMyself · 17/02/2020 20:01

I used iTunes with a speaker for a long time. Now I ask Alexa.

123456abcd · 17/02/2020 20:02

I seem to be way behind the curve! I listen to music on the radio on DAB portable sports radio, car radio (no DAB), TV, DAB radio at home and internet. I don't own a smart speaker and only DS has paid for Spotify.

Sparklesocks · 17/02/2020 20:02

Apple Music subscription on my phone mostly. I have playlists which I’ve put together, and I mostly just hit shuffle. Or I listen to their own playlists (they have them for every conceivable genre!). I tend to listen to music mainly on the go, on my commute etc or walking to/from the station. I also have magic and heart on in the car too!
