To Buy Cropped T-Shirts for 8 year old

My 8 year old DD has been nagging me to buy her some cropped t-shirts - the sporty sort she'd wear with leggings. Her Dad is dead set against it as he says the are too revealing for her age and she shouldn't be wearing them until she's older

I kind of see where he's coming from and have told her no a couple of times but now she is starting a dance club at school and says that everyone else will be wearing them.

Would it be unreasonable to buy her one?

@JosefKeller

What a horrible thing to say. This is exactly how eating disorders start!

Shoxfordian · 17/02/2020 14:52

Why is he sexualising an 8 year old? Gross
Let her wear what she wants

Flyingbytheseatofmypullups · 17/02/2020 14:54

My mum bought my 8 year old a crop top with mesh panels, it had LOVE written across the middle of it, and it was decorated with snakes and chains. It was like something Madonna would've worn in the 80’s!! It went straight in the charity bag.

CinderellasSecrets · 17/02/2020 15:02

I personally wouldn't like it either so I agree with your husband, you can get sports tops that aren't cropped that work just as well for dance classes. As sad as it is, there are people who sexualise young children - not the childs fault, and in an ideal world we wouldn't have to think about these people - but it is not an ideal world and as a child who was called 'sexy' and wolf whistled at (despite looking very young for my age and very small!) and knowing how uncomfortable that made me I would not allow my daughter's to wear anything that might encourage those comments.

PanicAndRun · 17/02/2020 15:13

There's crop tops and then there's crop tops.

The sporty ones for gymnastics,dance etc are fine, especially when used solely for that purpose.

There are also "fashion" ones that are slightly shorter than a normal top. Most of them touch the top of whatever bottoms you're wearing ,those are also fine.

Then there's the ones with slogans, shapes,materials,cut outs etc that are aimed at women that are just child sized. In my eyes those are not ok, just like many other outfits aimed at women that have just been shrunk down .

actually, feeding your kids a healthy diet and not letting them go unhealthy and overweight is how disorders DO NOT start.

Having to put an 8 year old on a "diet" is how problems for life start...

PanicAndRun · 17/02/2020 15:16

And it has nothing to do with pervs or sexuality or whatever, and everything to do with a child of a certain age dressing their age.

You wouldn't put a 15 yo in a footed onesie to go out or expect an 18 yo to wear peppa pig clothes/accessories.

amusedbush · 17/02/2020 15:18

@JosefKeller

I've had a lifetime of eating disorders, and I can tell you now that my mum being obsessed with me not getting fat is what started it. She would make comments about "flattering" clothes and to this day there are things I won't wear because I can still hear her voice.

FizzyIce · 17/02/2020 15:21

@Flyingbytheseatofmypullups I bet it was river island .
Their kids stuff is so gross and tacky.
They make kid versions of the normal tat they sell which I think isn’t appropriate .
@Shoxfordian he’s not ! He’s worried someone else might..

chellochello · 17/02/2020 15:29

My DH is certainly not sexualising her

His main reasoning for her not having them as he doesn't want her to grow up to quickly - for the same reason she's not allowed make up.

She won't be growing up too quickly if she's wearing dance appropriate clothing in a dance lesson.

You get hot in dance lessons - a cropped t-shirt doesn't stick to your back, it helps keep you cool whilst covering your top, shoulders, chest, upper arms - all the bits that can get cold quickly once you stop moving, even when your core temperature is still high enough to need to cool down a bit.

And it gives freedom of movement and the ability to see the 'line' you're making.

It's totally appropriate, as are leg warmers or arm warmers, leotards and shorts that cover your backside/nether regions whilst not interfering with movement or lycra over-knee leggings do.

It's just Dance.

hypnovic · 18/02/2020 12:47

Good Lord! It's you lot sexualising children that is the most worrying thing about this thread. Children have no sexual parts. This is sports wear or should she do dance in a onesie? Do you honestly think normal people are turned into nonces by clothes? Do you think actual nonces chose thier victims based on clothing? Jeeeeezzzz

Strictly1972 · 18/02/2020 12:51

I let my daughter buy one from H&M which was a lose crop top with a longer vest attached from the sports section. That was the only way I would let her. The novelty wore off after about 2 weeks so I was pleased with that result!
I now steer her towards slightly longer tops that sit just lower than her waist. She likes shopping at river island & they have quite a good selection of those types of tops so she’s quite happy with them

FizzyIce · 18/02/2020 13:03

@hypnovic there’s always one coming on spouting this nonsense.. times have changed
