UPDATE THREAD - Going to Australia for the weekend

I posted back last summer - the gist was WIBU to fly to Oz for the weekend for my male best friend's wedding leaving my 4DC and DH behind.

Response was fairly 50:50 that i was mad:it would be worth it. There was a good smattering of "you are in love with your friend" and at the end the eco-folks came on to tell me i was killing the planet.

UPDATE:

I went, it was amazing, my best mate and I realised we were desperately in love, ran off into the sunset leaving his fiancee at the alter and my DH and kids abandoned on the other side of the world.

Grin sorry......

I managed to extend the trip slightly so I was away for a week, 5 days on the ground in Oz. My parents very kindly said they would have the DC after school so DH didn't have to work half days as he planned which was amazing of them.

I got a great deal on the flight which was only 21 hours as it was only a refuel stop in singapore. I got myself some sleeping tablets, moved onto Oz time as soon as i boarded the plan and drugged myself to sleep at 9am uk time and slept all the way to singapore!

My friend picked me up at the airport and he had found be a fab little air bnb two streets from his house.

We had two days before the wedding so it was a mix of catching up, helping run last minute errands, decorating the house etc. I was also in charge of keeping my friend's dad from irritating the bride! (i've know him since i was 10, i know how to handle his sense of humour!)

the wedding day was amazing, it was really very special to help my friend get ready and be with him through the pre-wedding nerves etc. the wedding was fab, the reception was great fun. I got to know his now DW much better which was lovely.

the couple of days after the wedding the bride spent time with her parents and my friend and i got to do some touristy things - i held a koala and stroked kangaroos etc etc. we also got to spend a day in the nearest city to him before i flew home and had a really good catch up.

He dropped me at the airport and i drugged myself to sleep on the plane again on the way home.

I had no jet lag at all on the way out, arrived at 5pm local time and went to dinner, bed around 11pm and woke at 8am. Arrived home at 10am local time, small nap before kids back from school, bed at 10pm and up at 7am. tiny bit tired for a couple of days but nothing that felt like true jet lag.

was able to call the kids and DH at their breakfast time every day too which was great.

So in short, it was brilliant, i am so glad i did it and i would make the same decision again. it was the most special thing to be there to see my best friend get married.

Sorry the update wasnt actually as film-script-worthy as a lot of you were hoping for!

Of course it was a mad thing to do -- and loads of fun! I'm glad you did it and had a great time. These are the things you never forget.

He's an odd sort is @GinDaddy
Advice he gave on a thread last month was:

People are just enjoying kicking the OP. Stop

Perhaps he could take his own advice.

Anyway, OP, I remember your thread. I thought you were utterly bonkers so happy this worked out for you!

Peridot1 · 17/02/2020 13:52

So pleased you updated. Loved your ‘fake’ update! Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 17/02/2020 14:03

At first I was 😳 (at your initial 'update') , then I was😄, finally I was😆

Glad you had a fab time. We all need to to 'mad' things from time to time. That's what life's all about!!

Redandblue11 · 17/02/2020 14:13

Op that sounds amazing! I do remember too your first thread!
Great update Smile
Not sure if you allowed to say in public forum what sleeping tables you took, or was it melatonin?
Just wondering as I travel long haul at least once a year and never take anything and always suffer... I am thinking I should take something next time!

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 17/02/2020 14:16

I remember thinking it was madness!

Do you think you would have still gone/coped as well if you went with the original plan of just 2/3 days rather than a week?

Schuyler · 17/02/2020 14:23

Ohh you’re a glutton for punishment, eh? You’re going to continue to have a few people rip into you on this thread but I’m glad you enjoyed it. A week was a great compromise. :)

SlayB · 17/02/2020 14:31

Sounds like a life affirming trip. Can you DM the name of the sleeping pill. I had some tablets in the past that gave me a zombie feeling so it would be great to know off a better one.

Did you get the kids a present ?

lowlandLucky · 17/02/2020 14:35

I am so glad you went and had a fantastic time. Thanks for letting us all know how it went

doodleygirl · 17/02/2020 14:44

So glad you went, sounds like an amazing time. I would have gone without hesitation.
I struggle to understand the constant negatives from so many people. Life is for living and grabbing as many opportunities as you can.

Here's to the next adventure.

Bowerbird5 · 17/02/2020 14:45

WoW glad you enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommend drugging yourself up in case of emergencies and yes I have had two on that trip. One where we ended up in a different country to what was expected!

I am glad you up-dated. I often think I wonder what happened. I did think you were mad.

My shortest trip was a fortnight and would recommend longer but one but my mum died and I was only given two weeks leave.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 17/02/2020 14:52

there's one thing worse than killing the planet by flying to Australia and that's killing the planet without getting any joy from it. Glad you had a brilliant time.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 17/02/2020 15:22

Thanks for coming back to update! I remember your thread too and in fact I thought about you when I was waiting for a flight to Geneva last summer and what a hassle it was, and how a mad woman from MN was going to go to Australia for a fucking weekend Grin. Glad you had fun.
