To take sick child on hotel break?

Bookoo · 16/02/2020 23:02

Family hotel break planned for the last 6 months, first since before now 2yo DD was born. We’re due to leave in the morning for 2 nights.

3ish hour drive away, planned activities included swimming / full day at outdoor attraction / eating out / outdoor play park.

Wellies & rainsuits are packed for DS4 & DD2.

DD has come down with croup, today, and has been treated with steroids at out of hours GP.

Temperature has been up & down, her mood the same. Wavering between full of beans & snuggled on a knee, not eating much but drinking plenty. She’s sleeping peacefully now but obviously we can’t know what the night will bring.

We can’t reschedule, it’s paid in full. If we don’t go know I have no idea when we will get another chance.

AIBU to even consider still going?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

YABU - stay home, your child is ill
YANBU - crack on

I'll be honest and say I don't know much in terms of croup, is it just a cold that has a bad effect on some children? My decision would be based on how your DD is in herself, if completely miserable I might reconsider going but if they seemed fine I would go but just be cautious not to over exert them.

Stronger76 · 17/02/2020 09:48

travel insurance is not applicable

As in, you didn't get any? Hmm

Sure, op, go! Take your poorly kid, potentially infect loads more and ruin the rest of everyone's school holiday. Cheers.

blue25 · 17/02/2020 10:27

Well I hope you’re not going where we’re going. If she’s ill she needs to be at home.

TARSCOUT · 17/02/2020 10:27

Infectious for 3 days after symptoms stop or when temperature back to normal. Bet they wentHmm

Bookoo · 17/02/2020 10:30

@stronger76
No, as in the excess makes it pointless to claim. We’re talking two nights in a UK family hotel here paid for using a voucher scheme, not a fortnight in the Caribbean so simmer down.

And re infection, are you reading the same thread I am?!

@Stronger76

You do realise Croup isn't infectious? It's a reaction to a virus, usually the common cold so you're talking absolute rubbish!

Bookoo · 17/02/2020 10:32

And no, we haven’t gone. Unfortunately she’s still not herself.

It’s a shame but that’s life with small kids I guess.

MN is always very dramatic when it comes to sick kids.
You should never ever go anywhere with a sniffly child. You have to be totally fine with losing your only holiday of the year and £3K which is a drop in the ocean for people here apparently because your child had a tummy bug 5 days ago or whatever. In the real world no one would stay home.
It’s croup not corona virus. Calm down.
She’s not going to infect hordes of people

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 17/02/2020 10:38

Croup is infectious so you are being totally unreasonable to take your DC and put others at risk.

This is why Holiday Insurance exists.

Schwesterherz · 17/02/2020 10:41

@Stronger76 probably should check medical facts before firing broadsides. Croup is not infectious, it's a reaction to a cold in v small children or kids with asthma. It's very frightening to watch, but can be effectively treated with steroids, and short term with Ventolin.

Damntheman · 17/02/2020 10:42

My oldest would get croup almost every time he got a cold until he turned five. It's fine to go OP, the steroids work super fast as people have said and it's not very infectious. Does your hotel have a balcony at least that you can sit yourself on with DD if she gets croupy in the night? Cold air always worked the fastest for my DS.

Damntheman · 17/02/2020 10:43

Ah sorry OP I see you didn't go. I hope you have a lovely cozy time at home instead and all the best to DD for her recovery

MozzchopsThirty · 17/02/2020 10:43

This is exactly what I mean on other threads, parents can't even stay in with their sick children let alone 2 weeks in quarantine

It's ME ME ME, we can't go it's now or never, we didn't get travel insurance and now expect everyone else in the vicinity to suffer because we're entitled selfish wankers

Enjoy your trip 💁🏼‍♀️

vhs95 · 17/02/2020 10:45

I'm sorry you weren't able to go but probably the right decision for your family. It gets worse when they're in childcare and poorly and you're both working.

unexpectedthird · 17/02/2020 10:46

Another one saying CROUP ISN'T INFECTIOUS!

It happens as a result of the person catching the virus. My DD has been hospitalised with it on more than one occasion and each time she had a different virus. She outgrew it because her windpipe etc got bigger as she grew. The rest of us experienced the same virus as a cold.

To the OP, I'd say it really depends on how the virus is affecting your wee one other than the croup. If you think they are well enough otherwise I'd go for it. If not, I'd stay at home.

Sirzy · 17/02/2020 10:47

My biggest worry would be the the stuffy overheated air in most hotels isn’t the best for croup which needs fresh air!

When Ill most people just want to stay at home, she is hardly going to enjoy the break if feeling rubbish is she?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/02/2020 13:52

I wouldn’t have gone either. If DH had insisted I travel and go away whilst sick he’d be told no chance so I wouldn’t make an ill child travel either.

Orchidflower1 · 17/02/2020 14:14

I wouldn’t have gone so I think you made the right choice. Hope your lo is well soon.

Schuyler · 17/02/2020 14:15

I know you didn’t take her but just for record, I voted YABU because I’d have been worried about access to medical care as I know croup can get scary and fast.
Sorry you didn’t get to go. :( small kids, eh? Proper germ factories!
