Keys

I've seen it quite a few times on MN. Enough for me to be Confused about it.
"He/she doesn't have keys so I have to stay up"
"Do they have keys, OP?"
And similar.

Do people have 1 key between them?😱 What's going on? Why don't children have their own key? Why don't adults?
I grew up in a different country and since we took ourselves to school 1km away by ourselves at the grand age of 6, we also had our own keys. Everyone I know has keys for every person in a household and a spare for emergencies.

AIBU to wonder why people don't have enough keys for each family member?

I agree , as kids we had our own keys from been about 7 yr old , We also had a key hidden in a secret place well away from the house in case one of us lost ours ( we never did ) .
As adults all of the family had keys to each others houses but would of only been used in emergency , if we were going to each others home we would never let ourselves in .

My neighbours teen used to call round every sodding night because she never takes keys with her & her DM spends all her time at her partners place. I've stopped answering door to her, she's 18 FFS. And the upstairs flat puts the door on latch from 3pm because the Dad, 13yr old & 18yr old don't have keys. I've come home to a stranger in the hall trying door handles. It's beyond annoying. It's mega cheap round here to get one cut.

DH, myself, and the 13 and 12 yr olds have a key. We don't particularly lead busy lives but can be in different places.

I have a key for my MIL and my parents. I use MIL's if the door is locked (save her getting to the door) and my parents if they are not in.

My DS (13) has a key. Allegedly. He constantly loses it/leaves it at school/his dad's. It's infuriating. So generally I have to be in because he's useless at remembering it.

We have the same.

Why wouldn't people have keys to the house they live in? I need answers😱

They should make phone cover with space for key. Would never lose it
