To think frozen sweet corn is inferior to tinned? (Light hearted...)

Having a baked potato for dinner as CBA to cook. DC have been at their dad's so ate there. Fancied sweet corn on the side, I've not got any time in but there's a bag of frozen in the freezer (an online sub for frozen cobs) I've decided not to bother. I don't like it. Or at least, I think I don't. I've never actually had it.

I'm not fussy generally but have a mental block about this!

I find frozen sweetcorn tough. Tinned is fresh and juicy.

FruityWidow · 16/02/2020 20:29

I agree. I didn't discover this till recently when I chose the switch to recyclable tin instead of plastic.

ClaraLane · 16/02/2020 20:30

I completely agree with you! I’d stupidly forgotten all about tinned sweetcorn until I had some round a friend’s yesterday and it was delicious, not dry and hard like the frozen stuff. I’m never buying the frozen stuff again.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/02/2020 20:32

Yet peas are the exact opposite! Frozen is superior and tinned is weird

Tanaqui · 16/02/2020 20:33

No! Frozen is better- tinned has that weird milky taste. If its dry and hard you are cooking it way too long- it just needs to be heated, not cooked.

BreconBeBuggered · 16/02/2020 20:35

You have to be careful what you're buying with frozen corn. Look for bags with very small kernels. I find Aldi is often the best place for it. It's not too sweet, either. You definitely need tinned for a baked potato, though.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 16/02/2020 20:36

All sweetcorn is the devils food. I gave some to my DS once and it left his body in the same condition it entered. Whole and yellow. I've never eaten sweetcorn since.
That was over 40 years ago.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/02/2020 20:37

In the interests of fair comparison, I've decided to try it. Quickly switched it off having seen your comment @Tanaqui.

And Yes! I would never buy tinned peas! Frozen or fresh only.

It's the salt

BreconBeBuggered · 16/02/2020 20:37

Oh, and yes, never overcook it. Or add salt to the water. Good point, Tanaqui.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/02/2020 20:55

Results are in . It was ok. Not as bad as I thought. Taste was fine but yrs the texture was off. Like the skin was a bit hard.

TheNoiseHurts · 16/02/2020 20:56

The frozen stuff tastes like soft Lego.

LizziesTwin · 16/02/2020 20:57

I usually buy Waitrose frozen sweet corn but bought Sainsbury’s as I was in there. It was really tough and in the end I binned it.

1Morewineplease · 16/02/2020 20:59

Always tinned.

woodencoffeetable · 16/02/2020 21:03

yabu
where I live you can't get frozen sweet corn.
tinned is just not the same
tinned is not bad, but different and I prefer frozen.

SnoozyLou · 16/02/2020 21:12

Wrong way round!

Intruiged · 16/02/2020 21:21

Tinned is disgusting tastes like plastic and chemicals! Frozen if its not in season.

Gingaaarghpussy · 16/02/2020 21:23

Tinned baby sweetcorn is my go to. Frozen is too tough.

Although fresh cobs straight from the plant are best

mrsm43s · 16/02/2020 21:24

No, no, no. Frozen tastes like actual fresh sweetcorn, tinned tastes mushy and full of salt and preservatives.

(My frozen sweetcorn is never hard. You know you need to defrost it and warm it up?)

TheNoiseHurts · 16/02/2020 21:26

You know you need to defrost it and warm it up?
😂😂😂

I buy bags of mixed veg, imagine me taking out the individual sweet corn bits, not cooking them with the rest it the vegetables and then complaining that the sweet corn was hard.

Fannia · 16/02/2020 21:28

I agree tinned is best, and one of the only nice tinned vegetables.

TheGoatIsHere · 16/02/2020 21:30

The only frozen sweetcorn I've found to be as good, if not better, than my usual green giant is Iceland Supersweet sweetcorn. Worth a try

PinkiOcelot · 16/02/2020 22:04

I prefer tinned if I’m eating it in a salad or cold as a side (straight from the tin) but use frozen if I’m cooking it or using in a chilli or something.

mrbob · 16/02/2020 22:08

Definitely tinned. Frozen is probably ok in pasta sauces etc or in lasagne but even then only if it is an emergency

NauseousNancy · 16/02/2020 22:10

Lidl frozen sweetcorn is really good.
