To expect shop to change this?

Just over a year ago had my bedroom blind made by a shop. Bought the material not from them directly but they ordered it for me. Battery mechanism failed so they swapped it for a manual one, saying chosen fabric was too heavy for remote control. Fair enough.

A little over a year on and the manual one’s broken too. It’s obvious to me that the material I chose is just too heavy for blinds.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking the shop should bear the cost of replacing it because they should have advised me the fabric I bought wasn’t suitable?

YABU. It's your responsibility to buy a new blind or matieral. It isn't the shops fault. They had already honoured their good customer service by replacing it a first time.

My belt snapped. I've had it for over a year but it's obvious after gaining some lbs, I've been over stretching it. Am I being unreasonable in thinking the shop should bear the cost of replacing it because they should have advised me the belt I bought wasnt suitable? 🙄

Well it worked for a year.
If it had a warranty, it would be out of warranty by now
You will have to suck this up and see if you can get a sturdier mechanism

araiwa · 16/02/2020 13:30

How about you take responsibility for your choices?

fatbottomgirl67 · 16/02/2020 13:37

I'm surprised the shop didn't tell you when you ordered it that the fabric was too heavy. You can get header rails with a stronger weight ratio. I always use them for interlined blinds.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 16/02/2020 13:41

Maybe they didn't know that the fabric wasn't suitable? You said you got it from elsewhere so it's quite likely that they didn't know the details.

Ibizafun · 16/02/2020 13:43

I didn’t think I was being unreasonable as I expected the shop to tell me if the fabric I chose wasn’t fit for purpose as making blinds is their expertise not mine.

But by your responses it looks like I am, so thank you and I won’t be perusing them!

YesItsMe I chose the fabric from a manufacturer but the shop ordered it for me.

People never want to take responsibility for their choices. It's always someone else's fault. YABU. It worked for a year.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/02/2020 13:55

I used to make blinds. A big Roman blind with wadded blackout lining can weigh a lot and I never had a customer come back to me saying their blind mechanism had broken. What was your fabric...concrete?
For heavy blinds I used a 1:4 ratchet mechanism, ask them if they used this.
I'd expect them to fix it but for you to pay.

But first check that it is really broken and not just the child safety breakaway that has released

slipperywhensparticus · 16/02/2020 13:58

I see what you mean and I agree that someone should have said this fabric is heavy and might not last long but of course the fabric was bought then and would still need to be paid for

Geminijes · 16/02/2020 14:01

As the shop knew you wanted a blind made from the material and they agreed to order it for you then I think they should be held liable for the replacement cost.

They should have advised you at time of ordering that your chosen material was too heavy for your choice of blind.

They are the 'experts' not you, you would have no way of knowing the material was unsuitable.

Jaxhog · 16/02/2020 14:02

I think the shop had a duty of care to tell you that the fabric would be too heavy for either an automatic or manual mechanism BEFORE they made it up. They saw the fabric and they are the experts. It's not as if you were using it in an inappropriate way e.g. like stretching a belt.

But even so, after a year, I doubt you'll get more than a partial refund. But they definitely owe you something.

We had a similar dilemma when we ordered curtains for our bedroom. However, the shop advised us beforehand that the fabric was very heavy and that we would need a more heavy-duty mechanism. It was more expensive, but they gave us a choice. The shop you used should have done the same.

Reginabambina · 16/02/2020 14:06

We had similar once with John Lewis. We ordered a curtain and curtain pole from their made to measure service. The man told us which pole to buy. It later transpired that the pole was not suitable for the weight of the curtain. They tried to say it was our fault somehow. We did eventually make them come and replace it with something suitable but only after threatening to sue.

Ibizafun · 16/02/2020 14:58

The fabric was chenille so not incredibly heavy but also lined with blackout making it heavier. Jaxhog I also thought they had a duty of care to advise us if the fabric they agreed to supply wasn’t suitable.

The blind was very expensive though I totally realise that’s not their fault or problem. Is it just me though that thinks things should last more than a year?
