Not the happiest of pregnant people

So Kate Middleton is using a phrase I thought was rather a joke: She mentioned in a recent podcast that she was ‘not the happiest of pregnant people’

IABU to be annoyed that she’s using such an awkward and politically charged phrase?

(IABU in caring about this, but whilst the royals are shoved in our faces, I feel entitled to complain)

Should have posted in Feminism chat. It's an absolute non issue to the rest of the world.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 16/02/2020 08:40

oh holy hell. get a life. is there anything that doesn’t offend people?

^^^This.
Anything to start a row 🙄

JudyCoolibar · 16/02/2020 08:41

Erasing words like woman and mother may be nothing to some, but it spells disaster down the road.

Given that she used those words repeatedly during the broadcast, how can using an alternative just once amount to "erasing" them?

JudyCoolibar · 16/02/2020 08:41

Are you saying that women aren't people?

Wilmalovescake · 16/02/2020 08:44

Fuxake. Like there aren’t enough real battles to fight without inventing ones like this.

I had HG twice. Anyone who gets through it three times can describe themselves as whatever they bloody like as far as I’m concerned, it was awful.

TroysMammy · 16/02/2020 08:47

We've all heard the phrase "we fell pregnant" for example when only of course the woman is pregnant.

myself2020 · 16/02/2020 08:49

@JudyCoolibar exactly. i’m a person, a human. i also happen to be female, and have brown hair, i’m white and if european descent. in daily life i refer to myself as a person, the rest are details

ReallyLilyReally · 16/02/2020 08:51

I mean, I'm as cisgender as they come, but i repeatedly referred to myself and other pregnant people as a pregnant person rather than a pregnant woman. Not because I'm wildly "woke", but because women are people! This seems an absolutely bonkers thing to get upset about. FtM people can get pregnant, they're not women, you really need to get out more.

Christmaspug · 16/02/2020 08:57

I saw that too op .
I understand what you mean and I felt the same

Nowayorhighway · 16/02/2020 09:02

She had HG, I wouldn’t be happy if I spent months vomiting constantly to the point of dehydration either.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2020 09:03

I don’t think she said it with that implication.

UsedUpUsername · 16/02/2020 09:05

She is allowed to use language that is chosen to be inclusive - whether you like it or not

I’m not interested in policing her language. She can say what she likes in whatever way she wants. But I can still have an opinion on it.

Usually, text involving royals has gone through several rounds with PR staff so it just stood out as a curious choice to me.

But she wasn’t speaking from notes.

puds11 · 16/02/2020 09:07

I’d assume that she is working on the phrase ‘not the happiest of people’ which is quite commonly said and didn’t massively overthink adding in the word pregnant like you clearly have. Fml.

plunkplunkfizz · 16/02/2020 09:11

Some people just say person/people a lot. I do for no particular reason and I’m what lots of people would call a TERF.

ChipsAreLife · 16/02/2020 09:18

I think replacing people with woman sounds clunky more than anything. Didn't even think about the trans movement as I generally don't!

I actually said the other day 'this pregnancy is making me a miserable person' should I have said woman?!

lemonysnickett88 · 16/02/2020 09:21

I've also referred to myself as a person not a woman and it was nothing to do with being PC. I am both a person and a woman...

Incenseday · 16/02/2020 09:24

I don’t think she’s all that articulate. I hate the phrase “pregnant people” but in this case I don’t think it’s political.

SophieSong · 16/02/2020 09:26

I think it's sad that you've chosen to focus on the wording tbh. It's good that someone with her status is talking openly about not enjoying pregnancy which can still be a bit of a taboo for some. But you're here bellyaching about 'people' vs 'woman'. I think it's more useful for women to see the future queen talk candidly about difficulties with pregnancy than it is to mither about her language.

Mimi91 · 16/02/2020 09:29

All women are people, sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personally I think 'people' sounded better in the sentence than 'women' anyway.

Even if she did decide or was told to use a more inclusive word, isn't that her job? Surely we want our royal family to be representing tolerance.

The royal family are modernising and can only see that being a good thing personally.

InkogKneeToe · 16/02/2020 09:29

People are not pregnant. Women are imho

Are women not people? I thought they made up around 50% of people Confused

It must be exhausting going through life analysing and looking for hidden meanings in everything

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/02/2020 09:31

Why is she having another one.

UsedUpUsername · 16/02/2020 09:33

I actually said the other day 'this pregnancy is making me a miserable person' should I have said woman?!

No, the phrase pregnant people is the specific one, one that is increasingly encouraged among medical professionals to be inclusive.

Could be just an awkward turn of phrase. I just found it odd and curious.

It must be exhausting to go through life not curious enough to analyse things or chat with others about things that spark your interest.
