Using bitch for a dog

Probably going to be told to get a grip but AIBU to think this is a little bit odd. Have been having work done on house and also have a relatively new Labrador puppy.

On Monday a man came in to do some plastering and we had a brief chat in the kitchen about dogs. I mentioned ours is a girl and he sort of looked me in the eye and said ‘yeah, bitches are best. Less trouble.’ I was a bit Confused but told myself he was just using the correct terminology.

But on Friday, electrician was patting the dog and said ‘I’ve got a couple of bitches too’ or something to that effect.

I’m no prude (and rather too fond of the c word in the right situation) Grin
But couldn’t help but feel the men were enjoying being able to use the word ‘bitch’ legitimately, to a woman at home alone and was, if not creeped out, then just a touch unsettled

You need to get over yourself

Patchworksack · 15/02/2020 17:23

Only you know whether there was anything dodgy in the tone, but it is a perfectly legitimate word in that context.

user1471517900 · 15/02/2020 17:23

Literally using the right term. Yep I'm gonna say get a grip!

Nonnymum · 15/02/2020 17:23

If he was talking about dogs, surely that's OK. That is what they are. However it sounds as though there was something in the way he said it that upset you, and set alarm bells ringing. I don't thinknut can have been the word butch because a lot of people who have dogs will use the correct terminology

poseysbobblehat · 15/02/2020 17:24

Ffs Hmm

mumto2teenagers · 15/02/2020 17:24

YABU and need to get a grip

coconuttelegraph · 15/02/2020 17:24

Obviously you were there and heard his time of voice but as a general rule there is nothing wrong with calling a bitch a bitch, are you prone to overthinking?

Elbeagle · 15/02/2020 17:24

People I know who are ‘dog’ people always use the term ‘bitch’. I suppose as it’s correct. We have a male dog and whenever people stop to chat to us when out walking they’ll say ‘dog or bitch?’. Completely normal.

Queenoftheashes · 15/02/2020 17:24

😂

glittercandle · 15/02/2020 17:25

I’ve got a female dog and have noticed that it’s mainly people (both males and females) who are 50+ or people involved in breeding or showing dogs that refer to them as dogs/bitches.

BalanchineBallet · 15/02/2020 17:25

Wow. Are you for real? Your head would spin in the dog people gatherings! They even have six foot signs saying “bitches” at some shows.

Slith · 15/02/2020 17:25

Get a grip. They're using correct English.

Fishcakey · 15/02/2020 17:27

My dogs are bitches because they are female dogs and that's what you call them!

SallyLovesCheese · 15/02/2020 17:29

They even say 'bitch' releasing to dogs in the third Harry Potter film. Just correct terminology.

Unless there was a particular tone or smirk or something with it, I'm going to say YABU.

TheVanguardSix · 15/02/2020 17:30

It's the proper term, OP. But yeah, it's the super 'dog' people who use it. I don't use it because (I obviously need to get a grip), I do feel awkward saying it. But at the same time, I am not at all uncomfortable hearing others refer to female dogs as bitches.

Cherrysoup · 15/02/2020 17:31

I use bitch all the time on a dog forum. People always ask if mine are boys or girls irl, tho.

Dunarunner · 15/02/2020 17:31

I know I know. And I have used the word myself eg at the vets, in the pet shop.

Honestly would think nothing of it in public or in a gathering. It was the fact that two men chose to use the word to me while i was home alone and I got a vibe both times. The first guy was older and a bit odd and shifty in general, so maybe him in particular.

rainbowcase · 15/02/2020 17:32

What the actual fuck. He uses the correct word, totally in context and you have what problem with it? Are you such the snowflake that you can't hear the word 'bitch' even when referring to an actual bitch Confused

rainbowcase · 15/02/2020 17:33

It was the fact that two men chose to use the word to me while i was home alone and I got a vibe both times.

Seriously Hmm

Queenoftheashes · 15/02/2020 17:34

They even say 'bitch' releasing to dogs in the third Harry Potter film. Just correct terminology.

Tbf this was an analogy about Harry’s mother and meant to be offensive.

WorraLiberty · 15/02/2020 17:35

Dear Lord, unless they're 10 years old, I doubt they were enjoying using the legitimately Grin Grin

Dunarunner · 15/02/2020 17:36

Yes seriously. And snowflake - do we have to? There’s every chance I’m just not used to hearing the word in certain contexts and therefore am BU, but something about it felt wrong and I’m trying to unpick why

OP posts:
raspberryk · 15/02/2020 17:38

Really? Lots of people I know use bitch or dog, rather than girl dog/boy dog which makes you sound about 6. It's normal canine terminology.

Dunarunner · 15/02/2020 17:38

@WorraLiberty I mean I felt they were possibly getting a kick out of using the word bitch to my face in a situation where I was alone. I may be wrong of course, but there are definitely enough creepy, women-hating men out there.

OP posts:
VeryBowie · 15/02/2020 17:39

Yeah not to sound awful OP but bitch is the correct term for a female dog.
So for this reason...YABU.
