infants and junior school Valentine disco

My Grandchildren had a Valentines party at school. This is a junior school they are 6 and 7, I know its a bit of fun but surely its giving young kids the wrong impression, we are supposed to be learning them about grown up content, not encouraging it.
Tickets were £1 and if they wanted crisps and a drink they had to take money for them. Plus it was on Tuesday so they could still charge kids another £1 for number related non uniform day!!

It’s a disco to raise school funds. Can’t say I blame the school.

bridgetreilly · 15/02/2020 14:33

Do children that age even enjoy a disco? Why not let them do proper party games?

But YANBU, no need to make it Valentines themed.

Do children that age even enjoy a disco

Running around in the school hall with your friends, singing pop songs and eating crisps without your parents watching? What's not to like at that age!

Ellisandra · 15/02/2020 14:39

@bridgetreilly do you actually know any 6/7 year olds?! Most bloody love a disco.

What proper party games would you suggest, with 100 kids in a hall? Good luck getting to the end of musical chairs in an hour Grin

I find it odd how people appear to have suddenly embraced valentines day. Maybe it's more noticeable as my kids get older. I had cards and gifts that they had made at preschool there were also lots of kids at the primary school exchanging gifts which seems like a horrible idea to make people feel left out

bridgetreilly · 15/02/2020 14:42

I do, as it happens, and they much prefer playing games to having a disco.

Ellisandra · 15/02/2020 14:45

@bridgetreilly it’s not about what they prefer though, it’s what they like. You asked if kids that age even like a disco. My experience (years volunteering at multiple school discos!) is very much a yes, most kids love them. They might also like party games, even prefer those - but they still love the disco. And as I said - good luck playing musical chairs with 100 children. Disco and games isn’t either or, they can like both - and I’m surprise that you have experience of that age and ask if they like a disco.

ZoeandChandon · 15/02/2020 14:46

Uabu for writing ‘learning them’.

Likethebattle · 15/02/2020 14:49

I loved school discos as a kid, let them have a bit of fun. All too soon they become adults and we know how 70% of the time that is shite.

Marshy86 · 15/02/2020 14:53

This is nothing new I remember valentines discos at primary school and that was 25 years ago. Most of the adults would probably have their own valentines plans so I can understand it being on a different night. It's nice for the children to socialise with peers outside of an educational setting.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 15/02/2020 15:04

YABU. Valentine's disco has been around in every school I've known of (my own, the ones my parents taught in, the ones my other half taught in, and the schools my 3 children have attended).

It's a disco. That is it. Kids love them. School get to fund raise. What is the problem?

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 15/02/2020 16:00

It's a disco with a few hearts stuck around the school hall not love island.

With government cuts the way they are schools need to take every chance they get to raise money.

HeadSpin5 · 15/02/2020 16:22

What We3kings said, exactly!!

LettertoHermoine · 15/02/2020 16:28

@We3kingsoforientareandabump Exactly!
