To be scared of bowel cancer after diagnosed with polyps

Sorry to post on here but I’m in such a state and thought more people might read this as I’ve already posted on general health. Went for a flexible sigmoidoscopy this week for slight bleeding. Consultant found a 1cm polyp which he remove the same time as doing a full colonoscopy. I’m terrified they will find something more sinister as I’m now analysing my symptoms and realise that I feel like there is uncomfortable feeling up inside me too. I’m 44 and already on sertraline for depression. Just confined in a friend who helpfully told me polyps could me cancerous. I have to wait a few weeks for the colonoscopy and don't know how I’m going to get through half term.

They can be, but not always.
If you don't mind me asking, why did you need a colonoscopy?

They should be able to tell you the ‘type’ of polyp and if it’s the type to cause concern. Many of them are totally benign

I know 2 people who have had a routine colonoscopy, DH and my best friend (offered to over 55's) and both had polyps found and removed.
Both went back for results and both benign.

Both DH and I have had colonoscopy s and had polyps removed which were just fine. DH had been displaying poss symptoms of bowel cancer but was given all clear

Thanks so much for reassuring comments. Good to know that it is not so uncommon. From what I had read before it implied it was due to being over weight, drinker, smoker and eating diet high in red meat - which is not me at 7 st 6 and tea-total. Anyone else had polyps?

Yes I have just had 3 found at colonoscopy and taken out.All came back as NON cancerous. A close relative has also had them occur several times over last 6 or 7 years, one of which was "pre-cancerous." We both have to have colonoscopies every 3 years as another family member had bowel cancer. Lots of people make polyps and they are often benign. I just think at least if I do get a cancerous one it will have been found early enough not to have spread.

My DH had an over 55 bowel screening and a polyp removed today.

I have found the NHS bowel polyp article reassuring. They can turn cancerous, but mainly a certain type, and generally most are benign.

Yes, I also had polyps removed during a colonoscopy. I did not feel particularly concerned to be honest. I had the procedure because I have diverticular disease and had a bad patch. It was clear, whilst unexpected, and a plus was that I had a significant time free of discomfort afterwards.

Yep I have them. I have IBD though, and have to have colonoscopies yearly.

Flightsoffancy · 18/02/2020 08:13

Yes, they found some and I also had a worrying wait, but they were the benign sort. They also told me that even if they hadn't been, they were teeny and would be easily monitored or treated. Hoping for good news for you.
