Friends big birthday but opposite side of London - 90 minute journey on a good day.
Meet up is at 7pm. I’m 20 weeks pregnant. I’m very worried about getting there but then not being able to get back as the storm worsens. Similarly I’m worried about not going but making a mountain out of a molehill. I’ve been flakey about making this journey in the past and I know my friend is going to be disappointed in me if I don’t make it (again). She already has a houseful so don’t think I could stay over. WWYD?

If you don't want to go then don't 90 minutes sounds a total arseache to get home is the 90 minutes driving or public transport. Is it stormy already if it is just cancel if she gets annoyed she gets annoyed .

Mrsjayy · 15/02/2020 09:40

Ah right I would probably cancel if the weather was naff

kemosabeimalone · 15/02/2020 09:59

Yeah I agree with cancelling

Youngatheart00 · 15/02/2020 10:07

Train cancellations highly likely if last week is anything to go by. I do feel for your friend though - is she able to rearrange her celebration?

kemosabeimalone · 15/02/2020 10:15

Thank you. It’s being cancelled now and we are looking at alternative dates now - poor thing!

It is a shame pitfalls of winter birthdays I guess.

I wouldn't cancel, London transport was pretty much fine last weekend (including most trains). It sounds like you don't want to go, so don't go - it's an invitation, not a three line whip. If you have form for being flaky, then prepare yourself for her disappointment as she will assume you are cancelling due to flakiness rather than genuine worries about the weather.

I know people's tolerances are different though, I commute 90 mins each way to work in London (and did through 2 pregnancies, the snow in 2010, the beast from the east, etc) so I'm pretty hardy - whereas DH's family are country mice who get in a massive flap about a 10 min tube journey. Different strokes etc.

Xiaoxiong · 15/02/2020 10:22

Ah that's a shame for her but makes it easier for you - phew!

Ponoka7 · 15/02/2020 10:25

You do accept that your birthday plans might not be as you want when you have a winter birthday.

It's usually snowing on my birthday.

Mrsjayy · 15/02/2020 10:29
