AIBU to be a bit surprised that nobody in my RL seems to be bothered about coronavirus?

Maybe it’s because I have an eight week old DS but I’m getting quite concerned about the virus and the impact it could potentially have.
I know there’s been a bit of hysteria on here and I’m not trying to I whip up more but I’m genuinely surprised that people in my day to day life do not even seem slightly concerned about it.
Most seem to be taking the attitude that it’s just another flu, which it categorically is not - and there’s a lot of questionable personal hygiene about!

AIBU to be surprised at this? Do people not read the news anymore?

Yes I am feeling mainly concerned about DS, especially since he already has a bit of a cold (thanks to the steady stream of visitors we've had I'm sure - now winding down thank god I'm exhausted!) and seeing him all snuffly is bad enough.

@mummyzzz044 no vaccine yet, they are working on one apparently but differing reports put it at 1-2 years away due to the testing required. There's still so much the experts don't understand about this virus and how it works; that's one of the things that's so scary about it.

And yes to those highlighting it's not the same as flu, it's not at all - the death rate and infection rate is much higher and that's without considering the figures coming out of china may not be correct.

Good to hear preventative measures are being put in place around some businesses/schools etc - we have to take DS to the GP on wednesday for his jabs and I am really not looking forward to sitting in the waiting room with everyone. And YY, I know, that's overly precious I'm sure Grin

No vaccine, confirmed cases over 67000 now, tough restrictions on movement within China, advice is still to practise good hygiene and in China to stay at home, limit contact with other people and avoid public places.

PrayingandHoping · 15/02/2020 07:43

People worried about this need to step away from social media and look up what the scientists are saying

There was a doctor on the news this morning. She said the mortality rate is low compared to other viruses we see all the time. People should be more worried about pneumonia, rubella and measles. There have been woman contract it who have now had their babies... babies didn't have it and their breast milk was fine

Another scientist was on yesterday and they have created a vaccine. First humans to have it (still in testing stage) will be the summer hopefully

The info that's not sensationalism is out there. There is a LOT of wrong info on social media

Dennisreynoldsduster · 15/02/2020 07:45

@novocaneforthepain I'm not sure in that instance, but the pregnant nurse who had to self isolate had to send her children elsewhere :( I presume it would be taken into consideration if it was a BF baby though...I think there was a baby in another country who didn't show symptoms but was allowed to stay with the family while they were quarantined.

OP posts:
Mummyzzz044 · 15/02/2020 07:48

@novacaneforthepain. Thank you that is nice to hear. My baby Is all I care about. And yes they would quarantine you all I would imagine. But let's hope it doesnt come to all that and we can carry on worrying about how much sleep we are getting Wink lol

Dennisreynoldsduster · 15/02/2020 07:48

is there a link for that info @prayingandhoping I didn't realise that about the vaccine, the most recent reports I've seen from experts in the field were quoting years... sounds promising if that's not the case though.
I wonder how a vaccine would be rolled out? As (and correct me if I'm wrong) it seems that getting it once doesn't stop you from getting it again. So I wonder would it be given as a preventative measure, or is it something they would give sufferers of the virus (never heard of that before, so I presume it would be the former).

Willowashen · 15/02/2020 07:50

@Dennisreynoldsduster

Coronavirus doesn’t seem to affect young children, or at least very, very few of them. So even if it does develop further here , your baby should be fine.

PrayingandHoping · 15/02/2020 07:51

It was on This Morning on Thursday (I think... maybe Wednesday....) it was the scientist creating it

The summer was when it would be in pilot groups, not being given widely to public, she hoped....

Dennisreynoldsduster · 15/02/2020 07:52

Thanks @PrayingandHoping

I think those who are at risk of catching it are aware. So the only person I know who talked about it is a friend who spent a month in China, nowhere near Wuhan and is self isolating. She has no symptoms at all, but thought she should be careful.

But a lot of us have lived through other scares that allegedly were going to kill a lot of people in the UK. None did. I know that is because preventative measures were taken, but they are also being taken this time.

There was a nasty virus going round before Christmas. Everyone at my workplace has had it. I think this is what people are talking about on this thread when they say their kids have been ill. This is not coronovirus. It is a nasty virus that makes you feel pretty ill, but the risks of dying are the same as the viruses going round every year. I am pretty sure of that as I am immuno compromised and in the face book group I am in for my illness, lots have had this virus, no one has died from or been close to it. These are exactly the kind of people the coronovirus is killing off.

The death rate in china is 2%. But I watched a programme about it and the reason it has spread quickly in Wuhan and has killed as many as it has, is because living conditions are so poor. Lots of families living in very over crowded accommodation with poor sanitary arrangements. It is ideal arrangements for a virus to spread. Even there it is people who already have illnesses who are dying. So here it would be elderly people with existing illnesses that makes their immune system weaker who are potentially at risk.

But honestly I suspect a few more people in the UK will get it. We may have 1 or 2 people die in the whole of the UK from it, and the it will disappear like SARS and other viruses did before them. If I lived in Wuhan though, I would be concerned.

PrayingandHoping · 15/02/2020 07:54

The other excellent interview about putting it into context of other viruses was on bbc news 20 mins ago

scaevola · 15/02/2020 07:54

Testing a vaccine takes time.

The Chinese shared information on the virus early on, which accelerated vaccine design. It could still take 18 months or so to test fully and then put into production

novacaneforthepain · 15/02/2020 07:55

@Dennisreynoldsduster thank you for that.

@Mummyzzz044 me too! It's so stressful. Yes your right, actually... maybe I would appreciate the break haha! Good luck with your baby (and sleep) Smile

DCIRozHuntley · 15/02/2020 07:56

I'm vaguely concerned in a "hope we don't get it" kind of way. I suppose more aware, than worried. What good would worrying do, anyway?

I do think there's been some sort of cover up, but more that I think the Chinese government didn't come clean early enough. I mean, come on, it's called novel coronavirus 2019, but we didn't know about it until January...

karencantobe · 15/02/2020 07:57

@Dennisreynoldsduster The vaccine will be given presumably to those at risk. So I have had a vaccine for pneumonia, but most people do not get it. It will be targeted at those most likely to get it, and where it is most likely to kill them.
Even if the vaccine does not stop people getting it, it can stop people getting it seriously, so turn it into a mild cold type symptoms.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/02/2020 07:58

Whether the actual figures in China are higher is not relevant imo. The govt is taking tough measures to control the virus through improvements in hygiene standards in public places, reminding people about personal hygiene and limiting movement. There is no vaccine so these basic methods are all they have. What would you like the Chinese to do that is not already happening?
Other countries have taken a tougher stance than the uk e.g Australia and US- the UK has not closed the border so criticism of how the spread is being managed should be directed at Boris and not Xi.
Regarding people being removed from homes in China and quarantined- yes, that is happening. I have received information from our compound mgt that health issues need to be reported and there may be serious consequences for not complying.

everythingthelighttouches · 15/02/2020 08:02

If you are going to compare this to “flu” in a fleeting, dismissive comment....

This is not influenza. It is a completely different disease.

But if you are, it’s got way more in common with pandemic flu in terms of potential reach and case fatalities than seasonal influenza.

Conservatively, estimates currently put it at > 10 times as fatal as seasonal flu in an extremely advanced medical system. This fatality rate has risen significantly ( to ~5%) where an outbreak has occurred and rapidly overwhelmed the same advanced medical system.

adaline · 15/02/2020 08:02

I think people are aware of it but what good does worrying yourself silly do?

You can't just stop your life "just in case". People still have to go to work and buy food and take their kids to school. I can't imagine many bosses being too impressed if people rang in because they were worried about getting sick!

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 08:03

I’m a little bit worried, we had friends over a couple of weeks ago and they had just come back from Singapore. I’ve now got a horrible painful throat and feeling unwell. Hopefully it’s not this coronavirus!!

FudgeBrownie2019 · 15/02/2020 08:03

I understand concern particularly for families with little children or immunosuppressed people, but I also think that worrying achieves nothing.

I travel often for work and in the last month have flown several times and spent a lot of time in London. If it's going to happen there's very little (other than good personal hygiene) that we can do to stop it. I don't buy into the conspiracy theories that China are hiding figures or manipulating data; they're probably just struggling to contain it because living conditions are so different to the UK.

meredithgrey1 · 15/02/2020 08:03

I think there was a baby in another country who didn't show symptoms but was allowed to stay with the family while they were quarantined.

I think that was in Germany. I believe I read that they felt there would be more harm to the baby by taking it away from the family than by staying in the quarantine and having the family take sensible precautions. Although I now can't find the article where I read that.

RantyAnty · 15/02/2020 08:04

It's good to be aware but there isn't a lot that can be done about it.

So many people have horrid hand hygiene these days. I simply don't understand why so many don't wash there hands?

It really is simple to do and helps stop the spread of so many things.
warm water and soap every time after the loo. Carry a small hand sanitizer with you. Don't touch your face.

When I'm out and I have handled any number of germy things like shopping trolly handles, pens at the GP, on the train, door knobs, lift buttons, etc. I used a bit of the hand sanitizer.

I come in from work or being out, I wash my hands.

Teach your DC to do this too.

3luckystars · 15/02/2020 08:05

So it's not a flu, it's a virus with flu like symptoms that get worse and you can also catch it again and again. Is that right?

maddy68 · 15/02/2020 08:07

Flu kills more folk. The cynic in me things The media hysteria is their to deflect from something else so it's buried in the news.

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 08:07

rantyaunty hand sanitizer doesn’t really work. It’s proper soap and water that’s needed to wash away the germs. People are grubby! Apparently people take their phones into the toilet with them too - that can’t be sanitary
