To wonder why antibiotics aren't working? UTI

So I've had a uti since mid January. Now on my third antibiotic. First was nitrofurantoin, then augmentin and now clarithromycin. I've got a fast track appointment for urology as well as also been passing blood and spent 8 delightful hours in a & e last weekend.

I am just sooooo peed off with the pain. Haven't been able to go to the gym as it hurts when I work out, when I walk or run. Also been given vagifem pessaries for my dried out menopausal vag. Sigh.

Just having a rant really. Going back to work on Tuesday and having to use Uber as I can't trust my bladder on a long bus trip.

Also a bit worried as had bc before and gp handed me a cancer research info leaflet when he fast tracked me, without explanation. Never thought I'd be hoping for kidney stones again.

If they can detect bacteria, then it's very unlikely it's cancer. They just need to figure out which one it is and find the right antibiotic.

They're probably just being cautious as blood in the urine with no other symptoms can be the first sign of bladder cancer.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 15/02/2020 13:59

To all who have asked, it has been cultured. GP said yesterday that they were unable to identify the bacteria but it is definitely infected, hence 5 samples being sent. However a&e said that augmentin was the correct antibiotic.

I'm already on low dose erythromycin for hydrodenitis suppuravita. (spelling?).

I'm on the vagifem as it's supposed to be ok as I've had breast cancer, so I'm wary of anything else.

Hopefully everything will be ok. Have to concentrate superhard at work (emergency despatch) so it's horrible getting distracted by the pain.

How's it going op?

Babysharkdoodoodood · 18/02/2020 20:38

Got my cystoscopy booked for next Tuesday afternoon, after a v. Important career changing interview . Gulp.

Clarithomycin worked for Sunday/Monday. Blessed relief, then today the pain is back. Typical for my first day of earlies. So had to wait ages for the bus home then gobble down the road. DH is away so had to sort out fire and bins. My back is twinging away now.

Oh Op, I had this had a UTI every other week for 2 years. I was miserable. Make sure your drinking a lot of water it’ll help with the stinging. I’m not a doctor so had no real suggestions you have my sympathy!

Another PP mentioned trimethoprim, I’ve used this & it did work, it takes a while to work a good 3-4 days IME when you get it under control it’ll come back soon after I know people who are on a low dose of antibiotics to keep it at bay. Good luck x

cantloseweight · 18/02/2020 20:49

Good luck with the cystoscopy , is it a flexible one? I’ve had two , been told I’m having them yearly probably for the rest of my life (congenital bladder abnormalities) so you do have my sympathies Flowers

Have you got some decent painkillers to tide you over at least?

MaxNormal · 18/02/2020 20:50

D mannose might help if its e coli.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 19/02/2020 23:08

On D-mannose currently. Won't buy again as it's doing feck all.
It's a weird pain as it's not normal cystitis burning. It's higher up and deeper iyswim? Really hurts after I've peed and then sit down. Lots of wincing at work today. My pee is really dark as well, even though I'm drinking loads.

Managed to cut down to one coffee a day. Just can't manage getting up at 5.30 for work without it. Trying green tea instead plus water. Also gone lactose free which has helped my ibs immensely.

On the last day of antibiotics tomorrow so don't know whether to let go know that this one hasn't worked or just wait until after Tuesdays procedure. And I can't find a bottle to take a sample in!

Turns out it's not a uti. I have a congenital ureterocele. And a load of weird growths in my bladder wall.
So GA to pierce the ureterocele thing, CT scan on my kidneys in case there's been damage caused by no draining from it. And biopsies on the growths.

It doesn't inspire confidence when the doctor blurts out: ' Well, I've never seen that before!" Looking at the pretty flowering things attached to my bladder wall.

Oh dear.

At least you have an answer. Hope they can get you sorted.

MaxNormal · 25/02/2020 18:16

I'm sorry to hear that, at least it's an answer but I'm sure you're not too pleased to have to have a bunch of invasive stuff done. I hope that they get you fixed up soon.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/02/2020 18:29

Christ! I have my pre-op assessment on Monday. The nhs is going too fast for me. This is faster than when I had breast cancer. Getting scary now.
