To not get a "Pod Point" installed at home?

Right, so, I've ordered an electric car through work, on a 2 year lease scheme, it's coming mid-May and I'm super excited! I've never had a brand new car before and my current 11 year old pertol car only gets 26.5MPG (shocking, I know!)

Anyway, part of the deal for the car is that you get a government grant for the installation of a home charging "pod point" that charges the car in about 5 hours.

I've filled out forms and done questionnaires and taken pictures of our electricity supply/meter in the front porch and where the cable would need to be routed through the house as we'll be parking in the back yard (had special gates fitted so I can drive the car in as there's no dedicated parking on the front as it's a main road and a free for all) but long story short, they can't fit the pod point - too many obstacles due to the house layout and I'm not paying £300+ for parts and labour for them to drill and run a very thick cable through our rented property in a convoluted way so as not to cause a problem...

Now, I have read up online that you can charge an electric car on a normal 3 pin plug, granted it will take about 16 hours for a full charge, but as I should only need to charge it once a fortnight, I'm not that concerned about it taking that long.

I am, however, hearing coinflicting advice along the line of "it's not meant to be charged like that" and so on and I'm just wondering if anyone on here has any experience of using an electric car and can reassure me that I can charge it at home using an extension lead without burning my house down.

There are charging points at work that I could use if I needed to, and there are a few in various places throughout my town so I don't think I'd have to charge at home very often

TIA Smile

Definitely check what cable comes with it.

Pay attention to whether it's type one or two. Find out whether your local charge points are tethered (they have a built in cable) or not (you supply your own).

Ikea near me has built in cables for fast charging (chademo).
Lidl has no cables, not sure if it's type 1 or 2.

Check what work has.

Thanks all

I called the lease company, after speaking to the Pod people, to check what cables the car comes with and was assured it will have both a 3 pin cable and a charging point one (don't know if it'll be type 1 or 2 though).

I was told by the Pod people that they wouldn't install at the front of the house because the cable can't cross a pavement due to the risk of people tripping over.

It sounds as though there are enough charging points in my local area and at work that I will be ok

The e-golf uses type 2.

We have a Tesla Model 3. I think you'll be fine charging at work and other random places- you don't do loads of miles and you're sensibly underestimating how many miles you'll get out of your car anyway. You can always install the podpoint at a later date if you would like to charge out at the front. I'd just get an electrician to check the safety of the socket you might use, just in case.
You'll love having an automatic and an electric car - enjoy it.

Have a chat with your landlord figures suggest it adds 5% to home value so maybe they will cover all or some of it as a improvement it their interest

@FooFighter99
My golf is a hybrid GTE. So, less range on electric but a bit more flexible with fuel..

It's like driving a speedy dodgem.
It's very German though and won't start if you do the sequence wrong! Mine also has some kind of anti-collision software and freaks out if another car gets too close. It also decided a space was too small for me to reverse out of and put the brakes on Grin
The manual is looong.

Hahaha @Beamur that sounds both hilarious and ridiculous!

Because the car was on a special offer, I didn’t get to choose any optional extras so I’ve no idea what kind of kit the car will come with. But anything will be a step up from my 1.6litre Focus that does 0-60 in 5 minutes Grin

@Ejmorgan that’s a valid point about it being a “home improvement” I’ll get DH to speak to the letting agent and see what they say. I am resigned to not having it installed though, I think I’ll manage charging either at work or on the 3 pin plug. My mums neighbour has an electric Nissan and charges his on a 3 pin plug so it can be done, but I’ll ask an electrician to check our sockets in the extension just to make sure they can handle it
