To ditch contact lenses for good

I’ve been wearing contacts for 15 odd years now. Mostly without issue. Last couple of years (since DS was born) I’ve just not got on with them; they itch, my eyes get mildly gunky, etc. I’ve tried different brands and types, and despite several opticians saying they can’t see anything wrong with my eyes I can’t help but feel I shouldn’t be wearing lenses any more. WIBU to become a full time glasses wearer? Call me daft but I’ve never worn glasses before and as a 30 year old woman feel a bit anxious about the change.

I have just decided to do the same! So no advice really just to say I am in my 30s after contacts since I was about 15.

YANBU. I wore contacts from about 19 to my mid 30s. They were so much hassle. Started off with hard ones, kept falling/blowing out, then got soft ones but they were a hassle too. Been a happy specs wearer for years. There are such nice frames available now.

Of course you wouldn't be unreasonable to wear glasses full time, why on earth do you think you would?

LizzieSiddal · 13/02/2020 09:19

Go and try lots of glasses on, you’ll find a pair you love.

Glasses are great for hiding the wrinkles as you get older and when you take them off you can't see the wrinkles.

I gave up on lenses about five years ago due to itchy eyes. The only downside is glasses steaming up when going from cold and wet to warm indoors or when cooking.

I'm gradually switching to glasses wear for similar reasons. It's helped by the fact I got larger frames that I really like last time so the rims don't bother me. I have quite a high prescription so can't have massive ones but I like wearing them. I think I'm probably 50/50 now and I use daily lenses. I had to stop with reusable because they deposit within a couple of days. There's no way I'd get a weeks wear never mind a month.

I had to stop wearing my lenses a few years ago due to terrible dry eyes. I also became allergic to lenses. After not wearing them for two years and getting treatment for dry eyes my eyes have finally improved. I can now wear lenses every now and again on a night out. I should have stopped wearing them full time much earlier and things wouldn’t have gotten so bad.

So my longwinded point is that you are better to start wearing glasses now, so you can then still wear contacts when you really fancy it. Don’t plough on with contacts all the time if you are having reactions. Doing that really messed up my eyes.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I wear glasses most of the time as I find contacts uncomfortable indoors but I wear them for sport, nights out, scuba diving, etc.

I wore contact lenses from age 17 to 46. I got fed up of dry eyes and if it was windy outside, getting grit etc in my eyes. I was a bit vain so only wore glasses when I took my contacts out in the evening. I also used to lose a fair few too as the hard ones tend to flick when you're taking them out!
2 years ago I decided I'd had enough and got some lovely specs. I wear them full time now and I feel bare without them! Best thing I've ever done. Much easier to maintain too without having to soak and clean contacts. I'd say go for it OP! 🤓
