To be incensed with Samsung?

My fancy pants washing machine has stopped working - it is helpfully about three months out of warranty Hmm

Dr Google points me in the direction of the carbon brushes, I have watched a YouTube video and was convinced I could do that shit have it up and running in next to no time. However I didn't appear to be able to order the (cheap as chips) carbon brushes anywhere. So after an interminably long and painful conversation with a very pleasant lady in an Indian call centre (who gave every impression of never having seen a washing machine before) I have managed to locate the Mecca of washing machine parts.

On this call I was blithely told that the reason I was unable to find the brushes was because they don't actually do them as they are built in to the motor. So yes, I would need a whole new motor at a cost of £140. DH has meanwhile insisted A Man comes to inspect the infernal machine so by the time we've paid him, bought the part and then inevitably paid him to fit it we are likely to be over £200 down.
Obviously we will have to do it, but I truly don't think IABU to think this is daylight robbery

I bought a brand new washing machine for £180 a few months ago...

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 18:23

Don't stick to 12 month warranty.
It's not a user serviceable part (or they would sell them) so go from the point of reasonable life span.
Six years is still considered reasonable.

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 18:24

If you are in England *
I think Scotland is five years.

Raver84 · 12/02/2020 18:37

I always buy a mid range plus the added care. For example my current John Lewis brand washing machine is 350 I bought the 5 year added care for 75. So my total cost was 425. Devide that by the 5 years and my washing machine is less than 100 per year. They obviously don't always last 5 years and always need repairing but I've found free of charge repairs work out well. I have 4 children and we have a enormous abount of laundry so our appliances are under more pressure than say family of 3.

If they can't repair they replace and I've had 2 tumble dryers replaced in 4 years with brand new ones when the older one had a fault.

My year old dishwasher broke last week and that's also been repaired under added care. It's a no brainer when call out charges and parts are so expensive. As you say and often you need to find a company that's will Fix certain brands.

Ive found John Lewis and Very to be the best witb their extended warranty and John Lewis own make washing machines, dishwashers etc are all so good quality. I had a bosch before this one and they just as good for a fraction of the price of a Samsung.

justasking111 · 12/02/2020 18:44

How old is the washing machine?

TreacherousPissFlap · 12/02/2020 18:52

Washing machine is a little over three years old.

The brushes are a replaceable part, you can buy them for pretty much every type of washing machine (except ours)and they're about £20.

Obviously if the motor burnt out then it would need to be replaced, the thing is it hasn't and only needs to be replaced because the charlatans at Samsung have decided it is so

Look on your local FB or Nextdoor or similar and see if someone can recommend a repair person, they can usually source parts. Try for an independent rather than a large company unless you can find one that won't charge for 2 hours driving to go and buy (spares like a well known London plumbing company that advertises a lot on TV) making it cheaper to buy a new machine.

There is a website called white goods (I think) where you can get advice and sometimes order parts.

TreacherousPissFlap · 12/02/2020 21:50

We have A Man coming tomorrow, a local man who has taken three days to fit us in to take a look. I've just spent two hours and £17 in the launderette so I may have to hold him hostage until he sorts the shiny white bastard out.

It's not reasonable wear and tear. Ask Samsung to sort it or go to small claims . Have a look at Martin Lewis website

TreacherousPissFlap · 13/02/2020 08:57

But after three years I think it's probably appropriate to have to change the brushes belay? What I don't think is appropriate is having to replace the whole motor in order to do so .

Samsung are a nightmare. We had the same issue with the bearings just outside of warranty.

Before this I had to have the electronics console replaced - the Samsung engineer actually told us it was a known fault and at some point they'd have to be replaced in all machines, and yet not only was there was no recall from Samsung but they were still selling models with the faulty part in them! Fortunately for me mine stopped working inside the warranty period but for many others it happened outside that and they were forced to pay for the repair and new updated part themselves. This shouldn't be legal at all. Why should people pay to fix something that Samsung knew all along was faulty?!

Vile company!

JaceLancs · 13/02/2020 09:33

I bought washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge freezer somewhere between 15 and 20 years ago when warranty ran out extended it
I’ve not had to buy an appliance since as if they can’t fix it you just get given a replacement
I’m on my 3rd washing machine, second fridge freezer, second dryer
I prefer paying a small regular amount than one off big costs as I usually go for top spec higher brand models
Insurance also covers accidental damage and wear and tear so things like cracked salad drawer

Herocomplex · 13/02/2020 09:34

That’s interesting Hmm mine has just failed because of an electronic fault despite the machine being only 18 months old and used only twice a week on average.

I’m really annoyed!

Bogoffrain · 13/02/2020 09:36

I got a bush washer from Argos 4 years ago for £150. Still going strong used every day and more at weekends. It’s the best be I’ve ever had.

ginghamstarfish · 13/02/2020 09:37

I always buy white goods with a 5 year warranty now, usually from John Lewis but other places do them. Apparently there is a law that says such household items should last at least 5 years, you'd have to google it, but it's probably a big faff to pursue the company so a 5 year warranty gives peace of mind. Obviously it's not worth spending a lot to fix a three year old machine, if you could buy a new one (with 5 yr warranty!) for not much more.

TreacherousPissFlap · 13/02/2020 09:56

hmmm I just found them really difficult to communicate with, as I said previously the lady I initially spoke to gave every impression of never having seen a washing machine before.
I've also spoken to others who've said that Samsung are a nightmare. I know I certainly won't buy from them again.

Every product I've bought from Samsung has failed very early in it's life. It's not a company I buy anything from now.
