Next door’s fence

So the fence between me & the neighbour blew down on Sunday in the wind. It’s her fence & was repaired after a storm a few years ago - this time it’s pretty terminal & will need proper replacement.
I presume she has seen that it’s down though I can’t be 100% sure. It hasn’t been touched since it blew down.

I rarely see my neighbour as she works nights & has usually left for work by the time I get home, but we do say hello when we see each other.
Should I pop a note through the door saying something like “let me know if there’s anything I can do to help get the fence repaired”? Shall I just move the blown down fence panel off my garden & fully onto hers & leave it? Or .... ?

Can you effect a temporary repair? If not then yes, move the panels on to her garden. And try and catch her in.

Or if you don’t need it fenced them leave it.

Cloudyapples · 12/02/2020 18:09

Don’t offer to help - she might then take that as you offering to organise it all or even pay

Mummyshark2018 · 12/02/2020 18:12

Yes offer to help if you can. At least by propping it up or whatever.

honesttogod · 12/02/2020 18:14

I'd put the fence on her side but not offer to help as she may take it as payment help.

DarningKittens · 12/02/2020 18:16

I’d put the fence on her side just because I wouldn’t want it in my garden. She doesn’t have to replace it.

CathyorClaire · 12/02/2020 18:19

I'd shift it onto her garden and wait and see what she does.

Wilmalovescake · 12/02/2020 18:20

It blew down on Sunday.
It’s been windy ever since.
She works nights.
It’s only Wednesday.

Give her a chance maybe?

Purpleartichoke · 12/02/2020 18:21

I’d prop up the panel somewhere off the ground and just leave it. She doesn’t have to replace the fence so speaking to her about it is a bit pointless. If she wants to repair it she will.

If you care about there being a fence, then perhaps offer to pay for half of the adjoining length.

Joker123 · 12/02/2020 18:28

What @Wilmalovescake said.

Mine also blew down, ordered new ones coming at the weekend. I’m sure she’s fully aware.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 12/02/2020 18:31

I think I might be your neighbour....its being replaced on Monday.

GreenTulips · 12/02/2020 18:31

My neighbour was like this!

Panel down and she’s hammering int he door asking for it to be repaired in 90 MPH wind when all the repair guys are dealing with roofs.

It’s only been a few days - why go bothering her?

1Morewineplease · 12/02/2020 18:32

I’d leave it until the weekend and maybe ask her if she needs help to prop it up until she can get it fixed.
I’m assuming that it’s her responsibility and not a landlord’s?

SinglePringle · 12/02/2020 18:34

What Wilma said. Give her a blinking chance!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 12/02/2020 18:35

Ours came down, we've moved them to the side but not even considering repairs or replacements till the stormy seasons over. This weekends going to be a nightmare again, not worth doing the work.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2020 18:37

I could be your neighbour too, i reported mine going down on Sunday. Rang them monday they said it wasnt urgent and would take 5-10 days. A guy who was repairing something else took the 2 panel that had gone away.

I put a temporary 1 up to stop my dogs going next door, heaven help me if that gets blown down at the wkend.

Danni91 · 12/02/2020 18:40

Ours come down not replacing until I know if anymore will. Delivery is £10 a time & I don't wanna have to pay it twice. Plus there is finding someone to come help do it!
It'll keep for a week or so, unless you have a dog I can't see the issue, young children usually arent out playing in this miserable weather.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2020 18:40

Btw im with a housing association and they take forever if not urgent.

Straycatstrut · 12/02/2020 18:46

Oh God this happened last year with me. MASSIVE huge heavy fence was half down - proper danger to my 2 and 6 year olds. Trouble was I was renting and the landlord owned nextdoor too. No one else I could complain to and he just left it like that. Luckily I moved and have lovely strong fences and walls here.

In this case I'd mention it casually like "Looks like the storm finished off the fence this time!"... and see what they say. Honestly though I'd give them at least 2 weeks unless it IS causing a danger to someone. Also - apparently "Storm Dennis" is on his way this weekend, so better off waiting until he's been and done his thing. This naming the storms thing is weird.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2020 18:48

The next storm we have, they got to name it Gnasher lol

Welshmaenad · 12/02/2020 18:56

My fence blew down in the storm. I'm disabled and can't even safely get to that part of my garden till I have handrails installed. My neighbour gathered and stacked the panels and I was super grateful. I'll have to wait until my garden guy can come to fix it.

cologne4711 · 12/02/2020 18:59

(a) give her a chance

(b) she may not be able to afford it at the moment

(c) even if she can afford it, the fencing companies are likely to be very busy and it may take time to arrange someone.

(and (d), as a pp said, we have more high winds forecast this weekend so better to wait anyway)

Hannah888 · 12/02/2020 19:01

My fence came down too. I rang to arrange an estimate as its quite major. They were going to come yesterday but then postponed until tomorrow. This suits me fine I'd rather storm Dennis was over before repair. Give your neighbour a chance - if her fence is down then so will several dozen others. Last time there was a shortage of panels and I had to wait 6 weeks for new supplies. She must know and is like me- waiting......

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2020 19:03

End of last year i had 6 panels replace and unfortunately the 1s they didnt touch both went.

mumwon · 12/02/2020 19:28

you are not my neighbour? At the moment we have 2 panels next door & the back of the garden neighbours gazebo is in ours it flattened my elderly rotary clothes line - (I have been on at dh as we need a new one!Grin) fortunately the bit of fence that had the bird box which is occupied is still up right. I imagine we are all waiting for the winds to pass.
