Period legs

Women's health is too quiet.

Do you get leg pain/aches and/or hip and lower back problems with your periods? I'm suffering a lot this month but do have endometriosis.

If so, what do you find works best?
I can't take NSAIDs and take regular paracetamol and dihydrocodeine or tramadol. Hot water bottle helps too but I'm miserable with it today.

If you can't take NSAIDs orally, can you use them topically? Like an ibuprofen gel? They can be surprisingly effective. If not, perhaps a TENS machine?

EowynDernhelm · 12/02/2020 14:54

I get lower back pain on my period, yes. Hurts in a weird way, feels like my spine is going to shatter, so pressured. Hot water bottle helps, and I take co-codamol. But honestly, other than that, I am just waiting it out, knowing it will feel better a day later.

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 14:54

My dancing legs.
Feel like they've been partying in falaraki for a week without me.
Diclofenac suppositories were the only thing that took the pgp away.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 12/02/2020 14:55

I've got prescription strength ibuprofen gel. It helps a little combined with everything else. I'm getting pain every day of the month to some extent but am peri menopausal I think and bled for a month last time. It's tiring. Roll on the menopause!

Yes, the front of my thighs feel like I've done a thousand squats.

Likethebattle · 12/02/2020 15:06

Buscopan, across the coubternot is one for cramp and is a muscle relaxant. Works really well.

houseofhungryboys · 12/02/2020 19:32

Yes I've been getting this for the last couple of years only - I take ibuprofen, it's not bad enough to take anything stronger thankfully

SeeUNextTuesday · 12/02/2020 19:33

Thought this was just me! I get horrific pains down the front of my thighs when I'm on a period! I take ibuprofen maxim dose for first two days.

megletthesecond · 12/02/2020 19:36

Yes. I had them until I had a hysterectomy.

It must be a physical thing and not hormonal, as I still had my ovaries but no aches and pains. If that makes sense Confused.

badg3r · 12/02/2020 19:36

Yes I get lower back pain and now after my second child also an ache heavy feeling between my legs, kind of towards the front. It is similar to the pain I had late in pregnancy. There isn't really much I can do to alleviate it apart from a hot water bottle and resting. Oh the joys...!

AryaStarkWolf · 12/02/2020 19:40

Yeah front of my thighs get really sore and I have endometriosis as well. I take paracetamol for it helps full it a bit

Thisisthelaststraw · 12/02/2020 19:44

I thought this was just a weird thing I had as I have a few gynae issues. I get a pain, always only on one side but it can be either leg any month, from my hip all down my leg and I’ll always say to Dh “oh it’ll be here tomorrow”. It’s an odd symptom and quite sore and irritating.

I don’t take Ibuprofen since I had a stroke a few years ago (there’s a small body of research available linking it to MIs and strokes) so I have to resort to Solpadol or Solpadeine which I hate because it has codeine but taken very rarely so as not to become dependent on it, it really is a great analgesic.

Other than meds, I find a hot water bottle pressed close to my hip offers some relief if only for distraction.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 12/02/2020 19:47

Yes, I get them down my thighs.
Even though my pains aren't as bad as they used to be

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 12/02/2020 19:48

Yes my thighs get sore. A type of sore i don’t get anywhere else. They feel heavy and tired and like they’re being pulled down by some invisible weight.

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 12/02/2020 19:50

Yes! I get it down the back of my legs though.

longlivetheking · 12/02/2020 19:51

Oh yes! And in the backs of my knees!
I’ve been to see a gynae consultant today about this and my irregular and sometimes very heavy periods, but the pain I get is my main problem.
Currently just take ibuprofen and have a hot water bottle, really hoping I get something to get rid of them!

rvby · 12/02/2020 20:05

I get this. I had similar, but much more intense pain during labour. So I have a theory that it's the hormones that cause uterine contractions (which cause you to both give birth, and to have a period) that affect nearby muscle tissue as well.

So basically your leg/thigh/hip/back muscles are in a slight contraction for a while before your uterus gets its arse in gear and starts bleeding properly.

Rumnraisin · 12/02/2020 20:09

I have PCOS and I used to get horrible pain seeping into my thighs regularly, sometimes with crippling ovary pain. My GP prescribed the Pill and sorted it out completely. I don’t particularly want to be on the pill but not being on it isn’t an option.

CarolinaPink · 12/02/2020 20:18

Thank God I don't have them any more, because when I did have them I had significant nausea (sometimes vomiting) and terrible lower back pain + my whole tummy was in turmoil. What worked for me (insofar as anything did) was Panadol Extra (specifically that - nothing else helped) plus hot water bottles if I was able to be at home and try to sleep. If I could take the Panadol Extra and fall asleep with the HW bottles then often it had gone when I woke up. After that I kept taking the Panadol Extra as often as possible to try to prevent it from returning. Nightmare...

maddiemookins16mum · 12/02/2020 20:45

I get shooting pain in my thighs. It feels like someone has inserted a red hot poker under the skin at the top and ran it vertically down the length of my thigh to just above my knee. Always a few days before I start.

Picklypickles · 12/02/2020 21:22

Yes since I've had the Nexplanon implant I've been getting much worse than usual period pain, including pain in my legs and lower back, along with insane mood swings. I'm not even getting the periods any more but still get all the other symptoms x10.

Bubbletrouble007 · 12/02/2020 21:37

Yes! As a child I used to complain about the pain in my legs I swear my mother thought I didnt understand how periods worked and that gentle exercise would help! Pfft! Shooting pains down the legs and unable to stand up straight! The back ache is also horrendous. Diagnosed with endometriosis 13 years ago.... and two years ago found out I have a tilted heart shaped womb which apparently is the cause of the horrendous back pain... no one has ever explained the leg pain though!

housinghelp101 · 12/02/2020 21:38

My knees throb when I have my period.

bridgetreilly · 12/02/2020 21:38

Yes, I think it's pretty common. I'm lucky that it usually doesn't last more than an hour or two for me.

marblesgoing · 12/02/2020 21:48

Glad it's not just me then Confused

It's horrendous for the first few days of my period each month.

The front of my thighs and my ovaries literally throb and ache. I have a stand up physical job and it's awful.
Can't take ibuprofen due to other life time meds so I take a codiene on the worst days and then literally have to crawl into bed when I get home 😳

Had checks as I was worried but it seems I'm peri menopausal
