to go to the lake district this weekend with Storm Dennis?

Accommodation and trains already booked and non refundable. We are staying in Ambleside and was hoping to go on some walks. Haven't been to the Lakes in years, so was really looking forward to it. With DCs 9 and 11.

But storm Dennis is predicted and this is not just a normal bit of rain is it? Would it be wiser to cancel or can the this weekend away be salvaged?
Worried about cancelled trains/added expense of taxis, getting to and from places because of heavy rain, not being able to go on long walks etc etc. Kids are looking forward to staying in a youth hostel and a change of scenery.

Don't know what to do!

Personally, I wouldnt go. You would likely end up stuck in your accommodation and there have been floods all over too, not to.mention cancelled trains etc.

Crawley65 · 12/02/2020 12:54

If the train is cancelled at least you will get some or all of some of your money back via refunds.

AnyFucker · 12/02/2020 12:56

Ah, give over

I was up there last weekend during Storm Ciara and I will be again this weekend.

It's not The Apocalypse.

melj1213 · 12/02/2020 13:03

I live in the Lakes and I wouldnt cancel your holiday.

Yes it is windy and rainy, but it's like that most of the year up here! Make sure to pack lots of warm clothes and waterproofs and you'll be fine.

lovingllamaa · 12/02/2020 13:09

Would you prefer to go and for the weather to be awful and not be able to do anything or to not go and the weather turns out to be not that bad?

DataColour · 12/02/2020 13:15

I think I'd prefer to go to be honest. Last weekend was pretty bad in Manchester (where we are), so I don't know what it's going to be like. DH is erring towards not going.
We don't have a car, was going to take our bikes, but not doing that anymore. Worried about being stranded, but it's only for 2 days, how bad can it get!?

Another person who lives here, yes last week was stormy, but we still went up to Whinlatter forest and had a walk, then into Keswick to look at the lake and to go for a coffee .
I'm sure storm Dennis is supposed to be less wild.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/02/2020 13:21

We're going to Keswick this weekend. We are fully kitted out with waterproofs and will do shorter lower level walks rather than the higher levels we were hoping for. There's always the Keswick pencil museum.

Namethecat · 12/02/2020 13:25

Last week the pencil museum was closed as the road was ( slightly ) flooded.

Theraincloud8 · 12/02/2020 13:28

Where you training from? The line was closed between Preston and Scotland the other day due to flooding. I’d check that before you travel.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/02/2020 13:32

Last week the pencil museum was closed as the road was ( slightly ) flooded. That's a shame. I would actually quite like to go there, apparently it's much more interesting than it sounds.

whitesoxx · 12/02/2020 13:41

Go, it'll be fine. It's a storm not the apocalypse, no need for dramas. If the train is cancelled then that's that but otherwise I would.

RepeatAdNauseum · 12/02/2020 13:44

We don't have a car

That's the only bit that would put me off... You might get stuck if the weather is bad enough for no public transport/walking/biking, but not bad enough that you need to stay inside the Youth Hostel. Could either of you hire one?

If not, it's a call on whether you'd rather be stuck there without being able to do anything or if you'd rather stay home and miss the holiday when it might be okay.

Kitsmummy · 12/02/2020 13:49

I was all "go for it" until you mentioned youth hostel. If you were going to be stuck in a lovely holiday home with woodburner, wine and aga then it would be lovely. But potentially being stuck inside a youth hostel with a raging storm...nah

FelicityBeedle · 12/02/2020 13:52

Definitely go! Plenty of layers and waterproofs and you’ll still have a fab tome. Bring cards, board games, books, and crafts too!

Billyeyelash · 12/02/2020 13:53

Ambleside Youth hostel is gorgeous... Right in the Lake.
I'd go if not depending on trains but that's cos theyve been cancelling them near me.

Billyeyelash · 12/02/2020 13:54

ON the Lake not in it. Yet.

MrsA2015 · 12/02/2020 13:54

I’d go if I had the chance! You can always hire bikes if it looks practical enough once you’ve arrived.

Khione · 12/02/2020 15:23

Id go

Don't forget that the Lake District is pretty geared up for bed weather. Sis just sent me this though!

to go to the lake district this weekend with Storm Dennis?
Toddlerteaplease · 12/02/2020 16:17

The bus service from Ambleside is really good. Just be prepared to remortgage your house!

Wolfff · 12/02/2020 16:22

My Mum lives in West Cumbria just to the west of Keswick. In her area it wasn’t bad at all last weekend. Honestly often the storms turn out to be no worse than normal weather. Maybe check the forecast tomorrow or Friday but unless they predict something extraordinary, I would go.

Jennifer2r · 12/02/2020 16:54

Such snobbishness about youth hostels! Ambleside youth hostel is lovely and cosy and well equipped.

OscarVictorEcho · 12/02/2020 17:20

I visited Keswick last weekend and despite some pretty awful weather we managed to go for some lovely walks around Derwentwater. Sadly the campsite we were staying on was evacuated at 3.00am in the morning on Sunday and we had to come home 2 days early!! As long as your accommodation will be decent enough then I'd still go - there are plenty of cosy cafes and pubs that you can shelter in, if the weather gets too bad.
