To ask my landlord this

I've lived in a rented flat for 5 years and throughout the whole time I've been here there has been an issue - to varying degrees - with damp. I like the flat and the landlord (and the rent was affordable) and so, as he has done a variety of things to try and sort the damp (albeit not the things that professionals have said he needs to do), I've stayed but the time has now come to move on

When I moved in I bought one of those Tempur memory foam mattresses - it cost over £1k - but it has pretty much been ruined by the damp - it smells, the drawers in the bed base are warped and I really dread to think what it's going to look like when I lift it up and look at the bottom (as well as the part that touches the external wall)

My question is, WIBU to ask the landlord to give me some sort of compensation for this and towards replacing the bed ? I've been told it's not salvageable and could actually be a health risk...I don't see why I should claim on my contents insurance when the damage is a result of his property ...

No I don't think you can!!
You should have chased a proper solution to the damp problem.

Agree with above. You were happy to live with the conditions. Its because you stayed so long in these conditions that the bed is affected. You should have chased it up or moved elsewhere.

You can ask, but he will probably say no. We had a leak in the roof once in a flat we rented and water ran down the wall whilst we were out and damaged our sofa. The estate agents told us to claim it on our home insurance. It’s sh*t.
