To feel guilty not getting out with Dd everyday?

I just wondered what other parents of toddlers do everyday when the weather is so horrendous!? I only work so 2 days a week so I always try to make sure I take my Dd somewhere everyday when I’m off, even if it’s just to the park. Sometimes though when I just feel completely shattered or if it’s chucking it down we have a day in and I feel massively guilty for not taking her out. I don’t know if I’m overthinking it but I just feel like I need to be keeping her busy all the time. She’s 20 months old and it’s just me and her most of the time if that makes a difference.

Im normally one to say screw the weather, dress for it and go out anyway, but the way the weathers been round here the last 2 days its genuinely dangerous. Havent even taken the dogs out let alone the baby. So if you arent going out because
of genuine risk give yourself a break.

Its good for babies to have downtime and at nearly 2 there is plenty to entertain her at home.

Break out the crayons and paper, some fingerpaints, let her mix some cakes, put down an old shower curtain and give her a tub of water and some plastic cups, she will be fine.

Dont feel guilty

I also go out in all weather's, as we have ponies to look after. This week though my dc have sat in the car listening to music on a couple of occasions.

Things we do in shitty weather - go swimming, for a walk, soft play, shopping and have a drink /snack/lunch in the cafe (they love a supermarket.....) visit my parents. Gym pit at the local leisure centre.

Thank you for the reply. Yes we normally get out as it drives me crackers staying in but I just can’t shake the guilt! I’m glad I’m not the only one, we might try baking soon I think.

We used to make a den under the table.
Use cardboard boxes to make stuff
Get all the cushions off the sofa and lounge about.
Make a tent in our bed
Read books and paint

It’s fine to stay home

Do you have any neighbours with similar age children who could pop over?

Make a blanket fort/get a little pop up tent, have little picnic in it.

Baker Ross is fab for little craft kits many of which are suitable for that age (www.bakerross.co.uk)

Do some easy baking (100g oats, 150ml milk, 1 mashed banana in a loaf tin @200 for 30 mins makes lovely oat bars without the mess of using flour or whisking eggs. Vary the recipe by adding raisins, cinnamon, choc chips, peanut butter, swapping milk for yogurt etc or whatever you have in the cupboard)

At that age, they tend to want to be quite helpful, so get them to help sort the washed socks into pairs, sweep the floor, wipe the windows, load the washing machine etc too!

Jesus the weather us horrendous!
I dont get this ' guilt' Enjoy being in and stop being daft.
Where do you think you should be going in high wind and storms?

Anychance123 · 11/02/2020 23:48

I’ve just ordered a play tent, thank you for all the ideas! @notacooldad I know it’s ridiculous isn’t it, I should stop being daft I know. I just struggle being stuck inside I think, we have a small house and get a bit stir crazy. I just wanted to check I’m not overthinking it or should be making sure she’s getting fresh air whatever the weather.

I try to get out with DC everyday even if it's just for a walk but it has genuinely been too dangerous the last few days. It's too windy and icy to walk anywhere unless absolutely necessary. A few days in the house is absolutely fine, don't give yourself a hard time over it.

We don’t always go out on a Sunday; if the weather is horrible and DD isn’t going stir crazy then we won’t although when we lived in a flat this was quite difficult. I’m currently pregnant and sometimes just too exhausted to manage it.

Absolutely no reason to feel guilty!

If my job didn't involve working outside I'd be staying home too Grin
