To feel crap at my job

I’ve over 10 years experience in my type of role. But still feel absolutely rubbish at it.

Right now I’m lying in bed feeling sick about going in tomorrow; just because I feel that I’m so rubbish at my job.

I get decent enough reviews, but I just don’t feel that I perform that well, and I’m waiting to get found out

Have you ever read about imposter syndrome?

Dylaninthemovies1 · 11/02/2020 23:11

I have. And I don’t think it’s that. I think I’m genuinely crap at it. I try my best, but just aren’t very good at it

Why would you be crap at it after 10 years? What do you do?

ChazP · 11/02/2020 23:15

If you’ve lasted 10 yrs without being fired, or causing any major calamity then I would say you’re doing ok.

blueshoes · 11/02/2020 23:16

Do you have high standards for yourself, higher than you expect from others?

Icanseethepigeon · 11/02/2020 23:16

I'm the same OP but for me it's been 20 years. I work in IT which is a moveable ever changing feast so it's consistently learning new stuff.

Still waiting to be found out and retired off.

turnedabout · 11/02/2020 23:19

You know OP, it's ok to think ur job isn't right for you any more. Ten years is a long time and it was s good job that made you happy back then but things move on , you have developed as a person and maybe you and your job just aren't compatible any more.
Dust off your cv and start looking. You are good at things , you just need a better place to do them xx

Dylaninthemovies1 · 11/02/2020 23:20

It’s IT too (don’t want to say the exact role in case too outing). I’ve did the same role in 3 different companies. Did some work that was really good in my last company, but nothing great in this one. I have a few MH issues which I think contribute to me feeling like this. The actual place I work is ok, the money is good, and my line manager is as supportive as I could reasonably expect for my MH issues. I don’t think moving jobs would help as I think I’d feel like this no matter where I worked

Are they not giving you enough career progression opportunities?

Emergencycake · 12/02/2020 23:57

I could have written this post. I believe this is a really common feeling and I do think you suffer from imposter syndrome as you seem to have made it through 10 years without too many issues.

I think you need to be a bit kinder to yourself Flowers

nomnomnoo · 13/02/2020 00:07

Is February work blues a thing? My last three jobs I have got them in January or February.

EBearhug · 13/02/2020 07:16

My vote is for imposter syndrome - in my experience, they're only too quick to get rid of women who are genuinely bad at IT roles (who probably never stood a chance, because they didn't get the same support as their male colleagues.)

Rubychard · 13/02/2020 07:38

Have you ever had an annual (or otherwise) performance review?

Dylaninthemovies1 · 14/02/2020 18:44

@Rubychard yeah, I get an annual review and it’s fine. It’s not amazing; just the usual “strong performer, good team player”. That sort of thing. Always some feedback about not worrying so much or having more confidence

OP posts:
Dylaninthemovies1 · 14/02/2020 18:45

@WorldEndingFire. I don’t actually want to progress any higher as I’m so worried about being shit at any other job. Years ago I was offered a promotion a number of times, but I decided I didn’t want the stress

OP posts:
Dylaninthemovies1 · 14/02/2020 18:46

By “didn’t want” I mean “couldn’t cope with”
