To thank the guy whose gf thought he shouldn't be reading to his DS(12)

Following a thread a while back where a guy's gf was annoyed about him reading to his DS, aged 12, I got thinking about how much I used to enjoy reading to the kids.

So I suggested to DD(13) that I read Lord of the Rings to her. I've read the book before, but I read far too fast to take it in properly, and we have watched the films together, but she has never read the book.

So now when she goes to bed I lie on the bed with her and read a few pages to her every night. We're both loving it, and it'll probably take us a year or more to get through it. Smile

I can't remember the name of the poster who got me started on this, but just want to say thanks to him! (and his gf Grin)

I used to read to my younger siblings, particularly my brother who was the youngest of five of us. At a recent family get together they commented on “The Little Broomstick” and “Carbonel” which they all remembered from my readings to baby bro. He will be 52 this month!

This almost made me cry as my children are 14 and 18 and although I might get away with reading to/with my 14 year old my 18 year old wouldn't be up for that 🤣 they absolutely LOVED me reading to them as younger children though and I loved doing it most of the time. I hope you all enjoy reading to your children no matter what age

What a fantastic idea! The DC and I read together but are reading our own books... am going to start this and read Harry Potter as I have never read it!!!

Aw @MsElijahMichaelson1 I hope you do! You'll love it and so will they.

I'm not long down from reading to DD tonight, and I told her to remember this when she's old and gray, and she told me she would ❤️

I read to my 10year old Dd every night. We’re currently reading The Secret Garden. I’ve read to her every night since she was months old. I honestly believe it’s improved her comprehension and vocabulary and it’s a bonding experience for us both. I do have nights when I’m exhausted and don’t feel like it but I know she won’t want it forever and I know I’ll miss it when it’s past.
What’s not to like about snuggling up with someone you love and losing yourself in a good book?

I've been reading to my nearly 11yo for the last week. HP Deathly Hallows. We are loving that time together.

Thank you MN for the so simple yet wonderful idea.
