AIBU to think this is odd entrance hallway behaviour.

I have a large doormat outside my front door, and wood floors inside the house. There’s a small entrance hallway between the door and the main hallway and on the floor of this entrance hallway I have a woven runner from B&Q to trap dirt. Some visitors wipe their feet vigorously on this runner, which to me seems odd as it’s not a doormat but more of a carpet, in my opinion. Do you think this is odd or would you wipe your feet on it?

Get one of those doormats that have something like 'wipe your feet you manky bastard' on it and put it inside so people have no excuse.
Personally I wouldn't wipe my feet on a runner or anything that looked like a carpet or rug. But it seems some people have no common sense.

Although whatever you put down there will be some people who don't wipe their feet at all (I'm looking at you washing machine delivery man with dog shit on your shoes Envy < not envy)

FruityWidow · 11/02/2020 10:58

Why would you wipe your feet on a matt that is outside the house and therefore dirty like the soles of your shoe? That's why they're wiping their feet on the runner inside your house.

ProclivitiesMcManus · 11/02/2020 11:02

Why are you asking us? It's the behaviour of the visitors who come to your home that matters!

Notso · 11/02/2020 11:04

People shouldn't be wiping their feet on runners, it's like wiping your shoes on a carpet or rug Confused

I'd get a more obvious doormat inside to spell it out for these goons.

viques · 11/02/2020 11:05

So is it a small entrance hallway or a long corridor with a two metre runner? If you are confused about its size and purpose I am not surprised your visitors are .

StiffUpperQuip · 11/02/2020 11:06

Outside bristly mats are for wiping most of the muck off, mat inside the door is for a second go. An extra place to wipe your feet especially if the mat outside is wet so it can dry your shoes off a bit. A rug inside the door however is a rug and not for wiping feet.

We have an outside mat, an inside welcome mat and THEN the rug/hall runner

AiryFairyMum · 11/02/2020 11:08

What's the runner for if not for people to wipe their feet on? I have one for that purpose. It's a hug rug one and has lasted years.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 11/02/2020 11:09

Haha Viques it is two metres long and is smaller than the actual hallway which is about six metres long by five wide. I hope that is clearer Wink

This seems like a total non-problem to me.
Maybe I'm just a heathen. I don't really care.
People are respectful enough to wipe their feet before coming into your house and you're complaining about it???
Why don't you just ban people from your home then there's no chance of them upsetting you with their incorrect foot wiping procedures?
Seriously!?! Hmm

lottiegarbanzo · 11/02/2020 11:13

It is normal behaviour. You've placed a non-standard item in a standard doormat location. Habitual behaviour over-rides visual cues.

Interesting that you've used the word 'behaviour' in your title - providing yourself with the answer, within your own question.

TalaxuArmiuna · 11/02/2020 11:32

you have said it is there to trap dirt. People wipe their feet on the things that are there to trap dirt. They are probably wiping on the doormat outside too, and then giving an extra go on the inner one to be doubly sure.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 11:33

I wouldn’t wipe my feet on a runner, no. These people are obviously very common and see coir and think “doormat” Grin
I suggest changing it for a long rug in more of a carpet type material.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 11:35

Get one of these to press the point.

AIBU to think this is odd entrance hallway behaviour.
unlikelytobe · 11/02/2020 11:38

I wouldn't think a runner was for wiping my feet on but if it was the only mat then I'd be confused. You need an outside and an inside mat either side of the door.

A friend of mine once came in my front door, stepped over the inside coir doormat to wipe her feet on my decorative rug nearby. I was aghast!

MamaGee09 · 11/02/2020 11:52

Door Mats that are outside don’t work, they are normally soaking wet. I would always wipe my feet in the mat in side the house. Everyone I know has a mat just inside the front door either in the porch or in the hallway.

Beautiful3 · 11/02/2020 11:53

I would put an indoor mat in. I find the outside ones are too wet and dirty.

Inherdefence · 11/02/2020 11:57

I thought that was what runners were for! We rotate two so one can be washed and dried while the other does sterling work absorbing the dust and mud.

Wilmalovescake · 11/02/2020 12:08

Surely your naice runner should go inside your enormo 6x5m hallway (presumably between the suit of armour and the baby grand Wink ) and you should get an interior doormat for your initial smaller lobby?

Squidwitch · 11/02/2020 12:12

I've got a grey glitter bath mat inside my front door, as dog shat on the coir one, and life is too short to scrub that out of a coir mat. So far, no guests have fainted.

notangelinajolie · 11/02/2020 12:16

Coir mats outside are soggy slug heaven. Have you ever looked underneath one? Shock

Door mats inside are definitely the way to go.

If you need a mat outside to scrape mud off get a rubber one.

Chinks123 · 11/02/2020 12:16

At least your guests wipe their feet, mine just wander mud on my brand new carpet despite me asking lots of times if they can take their shoes off. I hate having people over Grin

katkit · 11/02/2020 12:19

photo please :-)

JigsawsAreInPieces · 11/02/2020 12:24

To go in front of the grandfather clock, run in front of the double staircase and to just before the door to the servants quarters, no? 😂

TrickyKid · 11/02/2020 12:24

If it's just inside the door I would wipe my feet on it. Is it one of those sisal type runners? My neighbour has one and I assumed it was a door mat.

Wilmalovescake · 11/02/2020 12:26

Shit, the servants’ quarters.

I think we’re gonna need a diagram.
