As in if you are calling someone a (k)nob - I see it without a k all the time. Is it slang like cum rather than come?

Having thought about it in the shower, nob is for mates - an affectionate insult. Knob is when you really mean it.

youareacuntychops · 11/02/2020 08:12

Knob

Never heard of or seen Nob for posh nobs. Is it an English saying?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/02/2020 08:14

Knob=what you use to open a door

Nob=penis or another word for an idiot

daisypond · 11/02/2020 08:17

Knob for doorknob and penis have the same root. Nob never means penis. It’s from nobility. These words are in the dictionary.

pinkyinky · 11/02/2020 08:19

Spelt is a grain and also the past participle of spell in the UK @ImFreeToDoWhatIWant

It’s Knob

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/02/2020 08:19

Knob - on a door, small round protuberance

Nob - posh person, as in nobleman, your social superior.

Dickhead wold be knob.... knob head, knob end of penis

So both are correct. Just depends what insult you are trying to sling!

Babdoc · 11/02/2020 08:21

youarecuntychops, yes it’s an English saying, more often used in the plural, and derogatively, when speaking of the gentry - “a load of stuck up nobs”.
Knob or knobhead- more often used in the singular and meaning an oaf (or in modern terms, a dick or dickhead).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/02/2020 08:21

Knob

"Nob" means a posh twat.

"Knob" refers to the knob on the end of a penis.

NettleTea · 11/02/2020 08:25

as an aside the word cum makes me feel physically sick

LemonTT · 11/02/2020 08:31

Why can’t the OP just google this🤷‍♀️ Does it need a debate or vote?

Ellie56 · 11/02/2020 08:31

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Knob

Oulu · 11/02/2020 08:33

However I've learnt my something new for today regarding nob is a derivative from noble

Only if you're using it to mean upper class. If you mean idiot, it's knob.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/02/2020 08:35

The other day I saw a (presumably) personal number plate
6 KNB
Who on earth...?

Oulu · 11/02/2020 08:35

I always say 'nob' - 'knob' is for a door!

And also for knob end, as in the end of a penis.

xILikeJamx · 11/02/2020 08:38

It's a knob when you open a door.

Nob when you open a zipper.

Helpful to define the difference between the two to avoid confusion in text messages: "The knob came off in my hand..." etc

Loveislandlydia · 11/02/2020 08:39

Knob

youareacuntychops · 11/02/2020 08:40

@Babdoc ah ok, I don't think we use it in Scotland

balonzz · 11/02/2020 08:43

I've found this thread really interesting.

I need to find more things to do with my life.

Thinkingaboutsummer2020 · 11/02/2020 08:47

@LemonTT you are being a knob - hmm satisfying.

OP posts:
Bloodybridget · 11/02/2020 08:49

It's definitely knob, as in tool.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/02/2020 08:59

Knob.

Nob is someone posh. But standards of spelling are declining so fast that I'm daily expecting someone to come on telling us that only phonetic English is acceptable now...

Oulu · 11/02/2020 09:00

Nob when you open a zipper.

Huh? How do nobs or knobs come into opening a zipper? Unless it's a man's trouser zipper, in which case it's obviously a knob.

Mockersisrightasusual · 11/02/2020 09:01

spelt is past simple, something historic such as ye olde curiosity shoppe.

spelled is present continuous, how we spell today and continue to do so.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/02/2020 09:03

as an aside the word cum makes me feel physically sick

same here Nettle

It's horrible

Nob when you open a zipper.

What? No it's not. There are no "nobs" or "knobs" on zippers.

Re: "nob" and nobility, to "hob-nob" means to mix socially with people of influence or standing. I think it comes from "nob" from nobility and "hob"/"hab" - to have (archaic dialect) - to have (spend) time (drinking) with the nobility. Language is fascinating

MargotB7 · 11/02/2020 09:19

Knob Head
