To be nervous about driving on the motorway tomorrow?

I have a very important financial exam tomorrow in the Manchester area. I'm terrified of driving on the motorway though in this awful weather.

It's predicted snow and ice tonight and tomorrow. There's no way that it can be rescheduled either and I can't afford to rebook it for another day (the exam is £199).

AIBU and worrying over nothing here? Sad

I hate driving in this weather. Is it possible on public transport?

Michaelbaubles · 10/02/2020 22:13

The motorway at least tends to be kept clear of snow and ice just by sheer volume of traffic. Just take it slowly, stay in the slow lane and don’t let yourself feel rushed. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front and don’t panic.

That would make me very anxious too! Any chance the organiser will cancel? Could someone go with you, I always feel better with company.

Jackrusselsarecute · 10/02/2020 22:14

If you take it slowly the motorway is probably safer then minor roads! Good luck with the journey and exam!

Organised can't cancel, only in case of illness or bereavement. The weather is really bad where I live, really heavy wind and raining/hail.

I don't want to rely on public transport to get there and I've never done the journey there. It would involve 2 trains and a tram which I probably would find way too stressful than driving. I just hope I'm freaking over nothing and it will be ok!

As someone said above the motorway to a busy city will be well gritted and by the time you are on the road, fine. Just think of all the lorries etc overnight that will run over the snow and not give it a chance to settle.

I recently got a new car too and it's not that great on ice or snow. My old one was great! Wish I still had it.

Ok. It sounds like you have no choice but to drive. As pp’s have said, the roads should be gritted, drive slowly, don’t get rattled by other drivers, leave very early to give yourself time to drive with caution.
