I don't know what a healthy diet is anymore!

Go easy on me...

I feel like I've been on a diet since I was a teenager, and at the age of 40, I want to stop dieting.

For the past year, I've been doing a combination of VLCD, slimming world, binging. It's a viscous cycle. I'm currently about 21lb overweight but don't want to start yet another 'diet' and would rather sort out my approach to eating and lose it gradually.

So those of you who eat well, are a happy weight and don't constantly obsess about food, what do you eat in a day?

I eat loads and really don’t care! I’m slim do a lot of exercise (club run long distances to a decent standard)
The following is pretty standard

Breakfast: 2 toast/potato scone/crumpets for breakfast
Lunch: usually left overs from the night before
Supper: usually a Veg and tofu curry/fried rice/risotto/veggie fajitas/pasta with spicy sauces and veg etc

I always have sweets/crisps in the house and do pick occasionally but as I don’t restrict them I don’t binge
I’m vegan which does mean you can eat a lot of bulk in plants!

For me a low carb diet is key, because carbs make me gain really quickly and they dont fill me enough. My usual day is like this:
Small breakfast: eggs or yogurt or a fruit
Lunch: chicken or fish (sometimes another meat, but i dont like red meat too much so we dont have it often) with a lot of vegetables
Snacks: fruits, yogurt, nuts
Dinner: salad sometimes with chicken or vegetable soup
We have pizza about once a month and other take away once a week.

The key for me has been cooking everything from scratch and not eating processed foods
Admittedly I had to start this due to gluten intolerance and bad IBS
I don’t really think that much about what I eat as it’s nearly always healthy diet wise
If I could only cut out alcohol I would be able to lose even more weight

@Dixiechickonhols yes exactly- I still eat carbs, but I’m conscious that not every meal needs them. I just had a lovely omelette and salad and I will be full enough from that, previously I would of stuck a potato on there aswell or sliced potato up in the omelette because it’s “free” and there’s no need. It’s been a real lightbulb moment

I am a healthy weight (BMI of 20) and have just recently had a full MOT - all blood markers are excellent for a middle aged woman (real cholestrerol of 2.2, all vits and minerals good, HB1c of 32, thyroid good, kidneys good, triglycerite excellent) and I eat:

  • no processed carbohydrates at all (bread, pasta)
  • some natural carbohydrate - in veg, fruit
  • lots of good fats - olive oil, butter - absolutely NO vegetable oils (rape seed, veg oil, margarine)
  • lots of good meat - including fatty cuts and red meat but no processed meat
  • Anything else that is not processed to shit - eggs, cheese, nuts etc.

My weight is very stable since I started eating like this. Previously was a calorie counter but don't even think about calories now.

I am curious what is real cholesterol? Do you mean the ratio or total serum?

shook Yes I eat lots of eggs/omelette. I had the full English egg wrap this morning from pinch of nom Book. Will have cauliflower and broccoli cheese soup later then salmon and veg tonight. I do have a sweet tooth, my heB today is 2 hi fi bars. No rice/pasta/potatoes today. I’ve found SlimmingWorld very doable this way and have kept the weight off. Good luck.

I went for a health Mot. Local pharmacy were offering them free on nhs to over 40s. I thought it was a great service. Reassuring for everything to be confirmed in healthy limits cholesterol etc. One I went to was a drop in at a local garden centre.

Breakfast: overnight oats soaked in water x 50g plus protein powder x 20g and frozen berries x 50g; apple or pear

Lunch: chicken breast/cod fillet (or some other lean protein), brown rice x 50g (dry), vegetables

Dinner: as lunch

Supper (just before bed); porridge x 50g made with water plus protein powder x 20g

Snacks: skimmed milk x 250ml; eggs x 3; apple

If I need to drop a bit of weight, I cut the rice to 40g, the porridge to 30g and the eggs to two.

I basically eat anything, but would say that 95% is generally wholefoods or homemade.

I watched a very interesting guy once who said eat anything, as long as you have made it. It made huge sense as he basically was like eat ice cream, if you make it, eat cake, if its homemade. The likelihood of you rustling up homemade ice cream and cookies regularly is slim so you will usually end up eating more naturally like grabbing a banana and some yogurt as its quicker. When you do have time and made say a cake then there's no problem eating it as its not been a daily thing.

I still buy the odd pre made thing, but it did really make me reduce what we buy for convenience.

The fasting diet will work if you have no discipline. So for two days a week you have just 1 meal (but unlimited tea / coffee / broth). For the rest of the week you can eat whatever you usually do.
