AIBU to never go back to work?

A bit of background: I currently am in the middle of the longest notice period known to humanity and since I handed in my notice every day I’m being told I’ve done this and this wrong where before I’ve been told the same work is brilliant and asked to support other staff with doing the same work.
I recently had a miscarriage due to stress at work and was signed off for a week (my doctor had my fit note as saying workplace stress) however I didn’t tell my workplace because
1:this as they gossip
2: I’m leaving and it’s nothing to do with them.

Now onto the AIBU: I have asked for a unpaid 1/2 day off Friday to go to an appointment for me and my partner. I specifically didn’t say what it was for because I didn’t want everyone to know.
Now I’m being hounded for a doctors appointment card even when I only said appointment and not a doctors appointment.
I was then told I needed to give the specific location of where the appointment is taking place.

AIBU to never return to work and get signed off?

Btw I am attending an appointment for myself and my partner around possible surrogacy/IVF and I don’t want them to know.

In your position, yes I would get signed off they sound horrible!!

Em1151 · 10/02/2020 18:24

Yeh I’d not go back tbh

You have behaved more than fairly
They have behaved like arseholes
Sign off sick for the rest of your notice
If asked at new job, illness was related to miscarriage

I was working with a horrible company, I reported directly to the company owner. My month notice period was awful, everyday I woke up thinking I can't bear to go in. I stuck at it to the end though, which was good as about six months later I needed a reference from them. It's horrible but at least you have a definite date when you are getting out. How long is your notice period?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 10/02/2020 18:30

They sound horrendous. Absolutely get yourself signed off. How much is left of your notice period?

iwanttorun · 10/02/2020 18:46

6 weeks left on my notice period :(

I have a new job to go to after this one and I know they have had references from one of references but I am not sure if my current job has given the reference yet.

I have been signed off once in 14 years so being signed off recently was a big shock and they have not been supportive on my return.
They haven’t had anyone reply for my job and had to extend the advert twice and still no takers so I think this is another reason they are being so hard on me. It’s a statutory position so it’s not one that can’t be filled it that makes sense.

Sorry to hear about your difficult time lately. If anyone in my team asked for unpaid leave I would certainly not be asking for evidence of the time being taken off. Is there anything important happening during that time off? That is the only reason I can think of them BU.

iwanttorun · 10/02/2020 19:54

Nothing important happening as i made sure I had no meetings or anything due then.
All my work is up to date and nothing is due, I am also nearly done on work due middle of next month as well.

I think it’s more I’m having to justify where my appointment is and how long it will take for me to get there.

Get signed off. You absolutely don't need that hassle in your life. Its disgusting that they're acting this way and you're better off out.
References nowadays aren't like character referencs so all they need to confirm to your new employer (if they need one) is that you worked for that company from X date to X date, and that's it.
Hope you get away from those oxygen wasters.

Di11y · 12/02/2020 16:59

if you have a flexible work arrangement they don't need to know details, if you're asking for them to pay you as normal when you take leave it's reasonable to ask for evidence.

madmumofteens · 13/02/2020 13:40

I read somewhere as soon as you apply for other jobs you are treated as an ex employee!! In my case I was so stressed out by the long wait I reversed my car into another one I went to see a
my doctor and he gave me a sick line so I didn't have to go back x

DDiva · 13/02/2020 16:42

I cant imagine you have to tell them, hopefully someone with proper info can confirm. Unfortunately notice is just something you have to deal with. If this is the only issue at work you are being unreasonable to get signed off.

KingaRoo · 13/02/2020 16:46

Just say it's a personal appointment. Repeatedly. They shouldn't ask for details.

They sound awful but personally I wouldn't sign off as sick when you're not.
