To think that call the midwife is promoting smoking!

Just for the record I am no puritan or prude in fact I would consider myself a social smoker... Therefore I am not judgmental about smoking) however in the recent few episodes of Call the midwife... literally every other scene involves the cast and extras smoking... I can understand the need to show how life was in the 1960s ( more people smoked and fewer knew the dangers) but someone is lighting up in nearly every scene.. in the last episode a pregnant woman was offered a fag! ( again I get that pregnant woman didn't know the risks)
However It just seems like overkill, and almost like cigarette companies are advertising through the show!

What are other people's thoughts on this?

It is how it was!

I was born in the 60s and Mum tells me she smoked on the maternity ward.

I love watching CTM with DD, age 14. She has been home educated for two years and we call this a history lesson.

Watch any clips from a 70's talk show and you ou will see them smoking, it seems unreal now

And smoking on planes

Furrydog7 · 11/02/2020 20:38

It was the norm back then. I seem to remember Sheela saying that she kept a few cigs for emergencies in the 2018 Christmas special but doctor Turner was unaware as she was meant to be giving up alongside doctor Turner. Last Sunday there was all the stress with May's mum.

I was a teacher in Stepney in the 60s, and half of us used to light up in the staffroom at lunchtimes. It was the norm at that time. I can also remember my DM's doctor recommending that she sit down with a cigarette every day after lunch to relax. My DF had also smoked all his life. It was just how it was. A lot of girls at my college smoked.

I travelled to Canada with KLM in 1995. In the smoking part of the airplane. On the way back, I was one of the last passengers to check in on that flight and they had no more seats in the smoking part of the tourist class. Therefore, I got upgraded to business class - so that I could still have my fags! And this was only 25 years ago! ( I stoped smoking a few years later)

A pregnant woman lighting up a fag isn’t going to encourage me ( life long non smoker) to fancy a smoke! Ir anyone else I would imagine...

Pootlepootlepootle · 11/02/2020 23:17

I remember the fug I’d smoke that used to come from our teachers common room back on the 70s and 80s whenever the door opened! Our headmaster at primary smoked his pipe all day long, even in the classrooms...

I quite like CTM but the writing is about as subtle as a brick. It's a bit like watching Casualty - dd and I spend the first 10 minutes placing our bets about what illness/tragedy is going to befall the characters that episode. I'd say heart attack for Dr. T except the policeman had that recently so I'm plumping for one of the little Turners getting asthma.

iklboo · 11/02/2020 23:42

I've got to 50 with heavy smoker relatives and friends. I doubt CTM is going to incentivise me.

pemberleypearl · 11/02/2020 23:48

They've done an episode before where Dr Turner realised smoking was bad and gave up. I reckon they will return to this.

x2boys · 11/02/2020 23:56

The attitudes about smoking have changed massively over the last 20 years or so.I remember when I was a teen in the 80,there was a newsagent on the the way to the bus station from my school that would sell cigarettes 1 by 1 for 10 pence I think blatantly to kids in their school uniform can you imagine the outrage now???

katy1213 · 11/02/2020 23:58

Promoting smoking? Every time I see Dr Turner I imagine how his clothes and breath must stink. And how he must cough in the morning.
Luckily that ex-nun Fag End Sheila is smoking to make up the time she lost in the convent and so I don't suppose she cares!
