To expect some level of quality from the likes of Feather and Black?

I'm beginning to think it's not worth spending more at places like Feather and Black and really the quality is the same if not worse than many lower priced brands? It feels like all they've done is slap a posher marketing around the same if products. We bought a bed 5 years ago from FB and the bed frame has literally snapped. It clearly must have been faulty as DH and I aren't big people. DH sat down on the bed and there was this almighty bang from beneath the bed as the frame literally snapped. We contacted them and frankly they could care less. Surely it's reasonable to expect a bed to last more than 5 years or AIBU?

I don’t think their beds are that expensive. Five years of nightly wear could cause this, and I think it’s a shame but that’s nearly 2,000 uses for the item without it breaking.

A bed should last longer than 5 years!

Even a mattress is supposed to last 8.

Five years is nothing. I would expect a bedframe to last a lifetime. I have had my bedframe for 25 years so far. For a bed frame to break in 5 years is appalling - what are they making them out of?

mantarays · 10/02/2020 09:37

I’d probably expect it to last, too, but if it didn’t it’s not necessarily a manufacturing fault.

An iron bed?

I have a Victorian bed which has now been in daily use for 130 years.

mantarays · 10/02/2020 09:42

Lots of the F&B beds are wood. Some look a bit flimsy to me.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2020 09:43

Our cheapy Ikea bedframe is at least 15 years old. I wouldn't expect any bedframe to 'just break' due to an average weight person sitting down on it.

BaolFan · 10/02/2020 10:38

I have an IKEA Malm bed - we replaced it last year simply because we wanted to move to a Superking size. Our previous one (King size) was over 12 years old and still going strong when we bought our new one.

Lojoh · 10/02/2020 14:33

That is quite rubbish. I got a F&B bed in 1999 and it's rock solid. Bought another in about 2009 and that's still going strong too. I think you were unlucky!

ColumbaPalumbus · 11/02/2020 08:47

It wasn't even the wooden frame that snapped. It was the metal base that the slats sit on. It quite clearly was a faulty joint from the start. I think most people would agree that £1300 for a bed frame isn't the lowest end of the market and would expect more than 5 years out of a bed frame.

@Lojoh You'd think they'd want to keep us a customers but they honestly couldn't give a stuff. They've told us we can only expect it to last for the two years it's in warranty....

You could try threatening them with the small claims court. The test isn't what the warranty says, but consumer protection rules. The item has to be satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time.

It sounds like your bedframe fails this test, with a manufacturing fault/poor design and has not lasted a reasonable length of time - I would expect a reasonably high end bed frame to last through decades of normal use.

If you want to try again, follow Moneysavingexpert's advice.

For £1300 I would take them to small claims!

And yeah, looks like they've taken a turn for the worse - won't buy my next bed from them. Sorry for your experience!
