To keep on wearing 'maternity' clothes long after birth

So this was inspired by this article kind of

www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/style/decided-not-buy-maternity-clothes-got-pregnant/

Except I did the opposite. I had a baby two years ago. Instead of not getting any maternity wear like the author, I got loads. It never crossed my mind I should stop wearing it after the pregnancy finished though. I still wear my 'breasfeeding' tops, although I never even brestfed (didn't work). My maternity trousers were some of the most comfortable I have ever worn so I purchased a few more pairs for work waaay after giving birth. My maternity dresses are so comfy that I would hate to get rid of them. Do people stop wearing maternity wear the moment the baby comes home?

I hated my maternity clothes by the end of it! I was 10 days over due and it felt like forever. About 2 weeks after I had ds I got rid of the lot. I went to Select which is a very cheap shop and bought lots of items in the size I was at the time , so there was no pressure for me to get back into my old clothes but i felt nice wearing a few new bits. It perked me up !
Ps..... it took me a whole year to get back into my pre baby clothes !

I still use a couple of maternity tops as pj tops, and ds will be 25 (years not months) in October. Dh cannot moan that I don't get the wear out of things!!

DillyDilly · 09/02/2020 15:06

I only wore maternity clothes/next size up to accommodate bump for a few weeks after each of my children.

They were all too big for me after a few weeks as they were bought to accommodate a bump and extra weight gain. To be staying in the maternity clothes would have meant that I was prepared to keep the extra baby weight gained and would be on a down-ward slope to being overweight. Not for me!

I have a dress and top that I still wear. DD is 18.

amazedmummy · 09/02/2020 15:09

This makes me feel better. Most of my old clothes don't fit me yet so I'm still wearing maternity and stretchy leggings. DS is 11 weeks now.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/02/2020 15:15

I didn’t really need much in the way of maternity wear as I didn’t really show until fairly late in the day. But what I did buy I made sure I could wear while nursing so from that perspective I did get my money’s worth as I am still wearing them 8 weeks on.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 09/02/2020 15:15

I initially after the DC were born put my maternity clothes away because like others it was in my head I couldn't wear them but frankly I saw sense and got them back out , I have a lovely comfortable wrap cardigan I still wear (and DC are now 7 and 4 ) , I cant se a reason not to wear it until it wears out.

I bought a pair of maternity Jean's and the band was so comfortable I wore them for years , I only stopped this year as I've lost 7.5 stone and frankly they were beginning to fall down around my ankles

Clothes are clothes and although I really like nice clothes and makeup etc I'm a firm believer I dont have to wear things solely for their initial type of use. Plus the older I ge comfort is more important and maternity clothes to me were really comfortable

TriangleBingoBongo · 09/02/2020 15:20

I put on two stone so wore them until I’d shifted enough to get back in my bigger old jeans! About 6 months!

Most breastfeeding clothes double as maternity clothes, so I have some that are dual purpose. I wore some bigger normal dresses right through to 7 or 8 months pregnant and weirdly their cowl tops are breastfeeding accessible, so I was back into them straight away. I don't know if my boobs will ever fit back into some of my other clothes and there's a raft of inaccessible tops / dresses that have been unused for a few years now. It'd be different if I didn't breastfeed I suppose. The maternity leggings would still be essential though, I still can't take the pain of anything else on my stomach and scar. I had to buy more in a smaller size because 2 pairs were a bit baggy at the stomach and slipped down, while 2 other pairs got holes in them.

Dozer · 09/02/2020 15:28

I loved the long, stretchy tops and camisoles and wore them til they fell apart.

Dozer · 09/02/2020 15:29

The jeans always looked awful on me though, bad purchase for me, so gave them away. Probably fine on someone else!

I had to buy new maternity trousers after the birth because there was nothing comfortable I could wear over the CS wound other than a couple of maternity dresses. I had a humungous bump and went into maternity clothes from 8 weeks, outgrew a lot by the end of the second trimester and could only wear under the bump prior to birth (and even then I was struggling, my legs were still size 10, but the waists just weren't long enough to go comfortably under my swiss ball-esque bump)

I went up 5 cup sizes, so feeding/ maternity tops worked better anyway, I was still size 8 across my shoulders and back.

I ended up getting an interrim wardrobe as I lost the weight until I fitted back into my usual clothes. It all got reused in pregnancy 2 and was useful for the bloaty pre-bump stage as well as postnatal again.

SuzieBishop · 09/02/2020 16:11

I’m currently sitting in my maternity leggings and my baby is 9 months old!!

Cremebrule · 09/02/2020 16:15

I am still wearing maternity leggings and have a child that is about to turn one. They are a bit baggy now really but they are really thick and lovely quality so I’m reluctant to let them go. I’ve got a maternity jumper that has been shrunk in the wash and fits fine. I wore my mat clothes for longer than I’d probably acceptable but generally they do get to a point when they aren’t very flattering or start falling down. I need to go shopping and accept that I’m no-where near my pre-pregnancy weight.

Butterbeeeen · 09/02/2020 16:18

I just had surgery on my womb and was so bloated iv had to just wear pjs. I'm due to to back in in a few weeks for round 2 and was seriously considering buying maternity leggings for afterwards. Ironically I'm having a hysterectomy 🤣

QuixoticQuokka · 09/02/2020 16:36

I just sized up, but my work uniform was a polo shirt, so looked fine a bit big. I only needed bigger clothes for a few months and maternity clothes cost more.

PetiteMostlySweet · 09/02/2020 16:51

I just wore clothes that were baggier/more stretchy. Things like oversized jumpers & t-shirt dresses. I didn't even buy a maternity dress for a wedding I went to heavily pregnant this time round, just one that had a little more give in it. Did buy some jeans this time though just because I fancied still being able to wear jeans. I can't imagine that I'll wear them afterwards but definitely wouldn't judge anyone that does. Maternity clothes can be so expensive so why wouldn't you get as much wear out of them as you can, especially if you find them comfortable?

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 09/02/2020 16:59

I only had a couple of maternity clothes, went two weeks over. I was so sick of wearing the same old thing, I couldn't wait not wear them ever again !

anon2000000000 · 09/02/2020 18:23

I did but my dd was 11lb 4 so it took a while for my bump to go away.

Camomila · 09/02/2020 18:37

Apart from 1 maternity dress I haven't worn any maternity clothes after the baby was born.

DS2 is two weeks tomorrow, my bump's pretty much gone so I can't wear maternity bottoms but my hips and bum are bigger so my jeans don't fit, I'm stuck in loose summer trousers (cold) or a pinafore dress which is a bit snug but wearable.

opticaldelusion · 09/02/2020 19:00

I'm still wearing three tops and two dresses I bought whilst pregnant. My kid's 7.

youareacuntychops · 09/02/2020 19:03

I think I wore them for a couple of months until I could fit into the more forgiving of my normal clothes. Most of my maternity stuff was summer clothes (end of July baby) so by that time it was autumn anyway.
