Aibu to wear this to a royal garden party?

Hello! Just need a bit of sartorial advice.

I am not someone who dresses up, I work in a very informal place and live in jeans and comfy boots. I don't want to feel uncomfortable but I don't want to look out of place.

I feel I need to add, I'm not into the royal family, but I accepted the invite as I was just plain old curious.

I bought this dress the other day in a charity shop for a fiver and was wondering if it would be suitable to wear?

Would I need to wear tights?

Would wearing flat clarks style softbed sandles be a complete nono?

My invite stipulated no bare legs no open toed sandals and a hat was a must

We have thrown out our invitations but hats were NOT compulsory, and I went to one last summer!

How have some of you been more than once? We have a strict ruke that our nominees cant have been before. The Lords Lieutenants wont put forward people who have already been to one.

I've never been but Mum has been at three. Once as an 'unmarried daughter' of my grandfather back in the 1960s, last year on her own merit for long term service volunteering (DSis went as the 'unmarried daughter') and once when I was a child (but not old enough to go as an unmarried daughter!) but Mum and Dad weren't sure if it was for Dad or Mum (both do the kind of things that get you invited).

PILs have never been (MILdoes the kind of thing that should get you invited) nor have we (this does not surprise me). I can completely see that some people will be invited a lot and some will not.

I was nominated last year and queried it because I had been before.

The organisation who nominated me checked with Buckingham Palace and were told that someone shouldn't be nominated twice but I was fine because I had previously been as someone else's guest, rather than in my own right.

It's a lovely dress. Where is it from?

Try these if you do want a heel. These are life savers on grass! Do bear in mind that gravel is killer on even tiny heels though. www.google.com/search?q=heel+stops+for+grass&oq=heel+stops&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l3.3922j0j7&client=ms-android-samsung&sourceid=chrome-m

My mum & step dad go every couple of years. He's invited because of his job.

The dress is nice op. Personally I'd wear a small hat or fascinator, nude wedges and bag.

No they're not. Unless the organisation involved insists?

However, lots did wear them.

@dementedma I've been twice - but never been invited personally, once as the "18-23 year old unmarried daughter" with my Dad who received an invite through work (Mum went too) and once with my Husband who was invited by the local Mayor.

Berrymuch · 12/02/2020 13:52

My invite said fascinators were suggested attire, of course they aren't going to enforce it and not let you in without one.

dayswithaY · 12/02/2020 14:28

I went two years ago and the invite stated day dress with hat. I didn't see any women without a hat but admittedly some were just a feather stuck on a hair band. Some people were in stunning formal dress with amazing hats - like Ladies Day at Ascot. Some looked like they had come straight from work in black opaque tights, flat shoes and black skirt. One guest was wearing a sleeveless vest style maxi dress, flip flops with a flower tucked behind her ear. What would her Maj have said!

TheWordmeister · 12/02/2020 17:50

I think it’s worded ‘day dresses, usually with hats or fascinators’, so not a prerequisite & tights are def not mentioned. But honestly, loads of women were hatless, me included. My husband says I look mental in hats 🤔, so I’m not too keen on wearing them. And fascinators are an abomination.
