Upstairs neighbours driving me insane

HL123 · 08/02/2020 19:56

My upstairs neighbours have been there for a couple of years, and I generally used to hear them walking about every so often but it didn't bother me too much.
Over the last couple of months they seem to stomp around and I hear them multiple times a day, and it's got to the point where it's driving me mad. In the evenings it seems to go on for hours. I had a polite chat last week to see if they were doing some work to the flat or something to create the noise but apparently this isn't the case, and the man told me he'd keep a check on the noise.
There hasn't been any improvement and I don't feel I can go and say anything more.
I'm 22 weeks pregnant and worried that I'll find it worse when the baby comes because I'll have to be in the flat a lot more, at least now I can go out when I like. I can't afford to move.
I know some noise in a flat is expected but I genuinely feel like this is having a bad affect on my mental health, AIBU?

It could be the noise hasnt changed but your ability to tune it out has reduced due to pregnancy hormones. I had this with my neighbours and after ds was born and my hormones started to get to normal i could tune it out like i did before. Drove me crazy whilet i was pregnant. I felt like they were stomping about in my house. Plus once babys here theyll make more then enough noise to annoy the neighbours

Have they changed the flooring?

I lived below a buy-to-let tenement flat with exposed timber floorboards for over 10 years.

Note the word "livED".

@Pretenditsaplan I did think maybe it's due to hormones but actually thought I was mad for thinking that 😂 I hope that's the case

@Butchyrestingface I'm not sure.. if I do speak to them again I'll ask because it does seem something has changed

Tbf this is what happens when you live in flats. Especially gf ones. My upstairs neighbours are horrendously noisy. At one point their kids use to ride scooters upstairs across the wooden floor. It was awful but I just try to ignore it.

I'm guessing when your baby arrives the noise level from your flat will go up quite a bit.

Although their noise is annoying it might be sensible not to complain too much or they could complain when your baby cries in the night.

HL123 · 08/02/2020 21:13

@Lindy2 airborne noise doesn't seem to be an issue, only impact noise, so I'm hoping they won't be bothered by my baby too much Smile

If there has been a change to levels of impact noise only, I’m guessing they’ve done something to the flooring.

Good luck.

Unfortunately you always here noise from upstairs flats, especially with cheap hard flooring which is all the rage.
But trust us, your baby will soon be disturbing them a hell of a lot more than their stomping on the laminate.

It may be pregnancy - senses are definitely heightened imo! We live near a pizza shop and when I was pregnant the smell from the shop just overwhelmed me and made me feel so sick. As soon as babies were born it was fine again. Good luck with your pregnancy x

People who live in upstairs flat do so because they bloody love walking about all day long with boots on. They ask you that when you buy one or sign the tenancy. Fact.

I feel your pain. I have lived in the garden flat of a conversion for years with the same neighbours and usually don’t hear much during the day but every weekend they have massive, screaming arguments. It’s ramped up recently and they have a dog that pees everywhere so have put in laminate on their stairs and karndean flooring. They really are inconsiderate arseholes.

The problem is that once you become sensitive to the noise the more it gets on your nerves.
