Sarah510 · 08/02/2020 13:04

Looked at rental house today and really like it bu the they have put in carpet in both bathrooms! Downstairs loo and upstairs main bathroom. Worried about not being able to mop and clean around the toilet? Surely it will stink .... or aibu

and yes, I wouldn't rent a place with carpet in the bathroom. absolutely vile.

Pipandmum · 08/02/2020 13:27

As it's a rental you have no idea how clean previous tenants have been. And it's not just around the toilet - getting out of the bath, humidity etc.
I would ask if they will take it up - no harm in doing that even if they refuse. Suggesting you do it then replace it is not that straightforward - you will have to get something put in its stead. When I rented a flat out recently they asked if I would paint put my expensive feature wallpaper and replace the bright blind. I did as it was a good tenant for a long fixed term

I grew up in a house with carpeted bathrooms. It's honestly so disgusting. I didn't really understand the hygienic differences back as a dc but now I can steam mop and clean my tiled floors I cannot understand how on Earth it was clean. It almost definitely wasn't and also sorry if tmi but only takes one mishap at a time of the months and you've got a whole other issue to deal with when it's carpeted. If this light not affect you think of guests as well!
We also had carpeted kitchen Confused

@woodencoffeetable

a) saying carpet is never done in bathrooms in Europe is as categorically false as saying it's never done in the UK. Are you truly saying that of the millions of European bathrooms not one of them has carpet?

b) when you have Parkinsons even putting slippers on is a challenge. Not to mention that the slip-on, flip-flop style ones which are easiest to put on present a trip hazard all on their own.

Frenchw1fe · 08/02/2020 13:34

We stayed in a b&b in France about 10 years ago. There was no carpet on the bathroom floor but for some reason there was carpet halfway up the bathroom walls and on the ceiling. Hmm
Never worked that out.

corduroyal · 08/02/2020 13:37

Get cheap vinyl fitted over the top.

I had a friend with dust allergies who did this anywhere she lived, she couldn't deal with carpet in her bedroom.

independentfriend · 08/02/2020 13:40

I'd consider it a deal breaker. I have heavy periods and sometimes stand up from the loo and drip blood onto the floor/edge of the toilet bowl. With an easily cleanable floor that's fine. With carpet it'd be awful.

Dodie66 · 08/02/2020 13:43

We have carpet. No problems. Put down a thick towel when stepping out of the bath. No problem with Pee on the carpet either

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 08/02/2020 13:46

re bath mats disapproved of to? I don't have carpet but we do have bath mats which I stand on then dry my feet so I don't slip on the no carpet floor.

isseywith4vampirecats · 08/02/2020 13:47

we moved in July into a house with carpet on the floor and the previous owner was a lady on her own no way was it staying so when we got vinyl for the floor up came the carpet and underneath it was manky all stained from water what we did was used the carpet as a templet for the vinyl al lot easier, could you replace the carpet with vynil while you live there store the carpets somewhere and then if you move out put the carpets back in

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 08/02/2020 13:47

Of course people shouldn't pee on the floor, but for various reasons it does happen sometimes.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/02/2020 13:47

Not great. But not a deal breaker. We rented in the past with carpet in kitchen / loo and bought houses with carpets in the bathrooms. Long since replaced now. I’d get a pedestal mat if you’re concerned about drips and hire a carpet cleaner every so often maybe.

Have the carpets been professionally cleaned? This is something Dh and I had done prior to moving in. But it is worth asking the ll if they will do it seeing as there are carpets in hygiene areas.

MiniTheMinx · 08/02/2020 13:54

Wouldn't worry me, we pee IN the loo not round it.

I put carpet in the bathroom when DCs were small so they could run about without slipping over. Managing bath times was easier for me. Replaced the carpet on average every two years. We now have tiles. Which are dusty.

nevermorelenore · 08/02/2020 13:57

I'd be worried in a rental, as the landlord might get arsey if the carpet is ruined and try to take it out your deposit when you leave. Having lived somewhere with a bathroom carpet, even with just me and an ex who was neat and considerate, I know that they can get really damp and gross easily. Even with the windows open or an extractor fan, they end up stinking. I couldn't imagine dealing with a kid's bathtime. I suppose you could put lots of plastic down or something to protect it!

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/02/2020 14:01

'I put carpet in the bathroom when DCs were small so they could run about without slipping over.'

All types of non slip tiled floors available today so really no need for carpet which is unhygienic no matter how you wish to justify it.

happymummy12345 · 08/02/2020 14:02

I love carpet in the bathroom. My dad had it at his house and we had it in our old house. I miss it. That's why you have mats.

happymummy12345 · 08/02/2020 14:02

Round the toilet.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 08/02/2020 14:04

I visit a lot of homes as part of my job and I see carpeted bathrooms a lot.

I also see it on walls which I think is very Hmm! do they vacuum it?!

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/02/2020 14:07

Lockheart i disagree and dont see the point in them. I feel a non slip floor is safer for anybody disabled than unhygienic rugs getting in the way. If they were that important they would have them in hospitals and over 55 accommodation. Take my father for example, he is very unsteady on his feet and has special flooring because a rug he would trip over and go flying.

Ferrochrome · 08/02/2020 14:11

Deal breaker

Absolutely disgusting

UntamedWisteria · 08/02/2020 14:11

If you like the place otherwise, then go for it.

use bath mats, toilet mats, maybe a rug on top that can all be washed easily.

Brazi103 · 08/02/2020 14:12

It is just utterly disgusting but not a dealbreaker. You can remove it.

Strugglingtoquit · 08/02/2020 14:15

I grew up in a house with a carpeted bathroom and would never choose it now as an adult. Not because I make a habit of peeing on the floor, but especially in a rental you don’t know the habits of the people who’ve been there before you. Plus especially if you have children accidents happen!

Vulpine · 08/02/2020 14:16

I dont even like mats near a toilet, they just soak up boys piss

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 08/02/2020 14:20

No carpet for me, one reason being i have a migraine suffering teen ds who although he tries his best to reach the toilet he has missed and hit the tiled floor on a few occassions. My parents had washable carpet in the bathroom for a while but it became discoloured from cleaning products, don't like to think it might of been my dad miss aiming though!
