We went to our first orthodontist appointment last week, they said my daughter needs a tpa fitted next week .then back to the dentist for 4 teeth extracted before braces are fitted also she will need to wear headgear 4 times a week and braces on for 24-30 months is this the normal time scale and also how long after teeth extracted before braces are fitted ? Thanks

every case is different. Teeth come down at different ages and she's sounds complex. A simple case of straightening with fixed brace would probably take 12-14 months. Where the bite needs realigning it can add on a lot of time .
The time scale is an estimate and is assumed the child is invested and wears braces and head gear elastics etc religiously!

My sons teeth wernt awful. And barely scraped the need to have one.

His will be on for a year this month and prob has about 6 to 12m left.

No extractions, or anything else. Just very slight overlap.

The process of the assessment, then x rays, speak to orthodontist, then fitting took 7months alone. Very slow process

You need to ask your dentist these questions. Every person is different.

My DD needed some teeth removed before having a brace fitted. I can't recall the time scale but it was fitted fairly quickly. Her brace was on for nearly 4yrs. She still in retainers for another few months too. As the PP said the timescales are really dependent on how much treatment is required

DS had orthodontic treatment for 13 months, from initial appointment to completion. We opted for fixed braces with bands to correct a 12mm overbite and protruding front teeth. We were advised 36 months minimum on the NHS so we opted for private treatment.

TreacherousPissFlap · 08/02/2020 13:20

Does that make a difference astar?

DS is about 2/3 of the way through a 36 month programme which I assumed was so long due to the movement required taking so long. His appointments seem regular and I had no idea we could have sped the process up if we'd gone privately.

Having said that he has been treated well and aside from a slight ache occasionally after adjustment appears to have sailed through with little issues - I was however devoutly thankful when the hideous removable brace went

The fixed part -brackets & wires- usually go on about 1-2weeks after extractions. Assuming no post op extraction complications ie infection.

If your child is having a transpalatal arch and fixed u/l braces, it's probably going to be 24-36 months treatment length with or without retention.
You should have asked this at your assessment appointment though.

@TreacherousPissFlap we missed out the removable brace bit, that we were told would take roughly 12 months and went straight to fixed braces with elastics to align the jaw and straighten the teeth at the same time.
It was a totally stress free experience from start to finish - apart from on my finances, I'm still paying back the loan!

TreacherousPissFlap · 08/02/2020 15:16

Thanks astar , really helpful (though too late for us now!)

If I'd realised it was an option I would definitely have considered private. The length of time the treatment has taken means that any good intentions he had at the start re fizzy drinks etc are seriously challenged in the face of a three year stint. I also shudder to think how much time he's missed from school for interim appointments - luckily he can walk from school and we're not required to attend every one so the impact has been a lot less than it might have been but nevertheless Confused
