After being in the hospital with infection , and finishing the course of Amoxicillin at discharge , I thought things would be better. I finished the Amoxicillin on Thursday and my sore throat has gone, along with the fever, sickness etc . Great! But now I’n just left with this barking cough , I thought it would go when the antibiotics finished but it’s still here. I’m literally getting no sleep because every time I move , breathe a certain way, it triggers this awful dry tickly cough . I’m coughing all day but it’s more manageable than at night . Along with pregnancy tiredness it is just unbearable. Has anyone got any tips on how to get some sleep ?
I’m limited to what I can take 😩 it’s definitely a dry tickly cough , no mucus as such just a tiny bit every now and then, but it’s making me gag I’m coughing so much, and it sounds like I’m barking ! Any advise would be greatly received thank you

This is helped my eldest dd. A spoon of honey and some ginger mixed in(grate the ginger and squeeze the juice out and then mix it in and have a spoon of that if you can). It helped her.
Hope you feel better soon.

I strongly recommend you go back to your GP and ask what is safe to take in pregnancy. GP might want to check you over in case it has triggered asthma or something. My asthma was exacerbated by pregnancy hormones (hospitalising me) and a cough could be a nasty virus that is lingering or it could be a temporary or medium term asthmatic response. Ultimately if you are struggling to sleep by being woken by a cough that is worse at night, your GP and midwife will want to know.

@Didshereally oo I’m scared now ! 😩😳 I’ll call them Monday , thank you x

Coughs can linger, they can take a couple of weeks to go completely.

Pholcodeine Linctus, cough suppressant, but be warned it can be addictive (codeine). Better to save and have more before and at night and suck fisherman's friends through the day.

GaaaaarlicBread · 08/02/2020 12:29

@Chocmallows I’m allergic to codeine 😩

I've had a similar chest infection and am now on a second course of (different) antibiotics. I have been sucking bronchostop pastilles if I wake up in the night coughing and have been able to get back to sleep.

Boots throat spray was a lifesaver for me, it numbs the back of your throat so temporarily stops the tickly cough. I found its effect doesn’t last particularly long but it was enough for me to be able to drop off to sleep when I had a horrendous cough. Not sure about taking it in pregnancy as I can’t remember what the active ingredient was, I’m sure the pharmacist would be able to advise

Boots Cough Control is great for this - I bought a stock in case they stop making it. It sort of coats your throat and stops it drying out. It also tastes nice. Comes in a bottle or sachets.

Oh! I had a really annoying dry tickly cough recently. Had hardly any sleep for about a week. Someone recommended sucking on dark chocolate. It helped massively.

I’m pregnant with an awful cough so you have my sympathy; I’ve been sleeping on about 5 pillows to keep propped up as that seems to help plus a paracetamol before I go to bed relaxes it a bit

TheSmallAssassin · 08/02/2020 13:31

I find sipping cold water helps me a bit and not getting too warm in general. Hope you get some relief soon.

caketiger · 09/02/2020 02:07

We have one of those vicks steam vaporiser things. Bought in desperation with a horrid cough, cost about 70 quid. You put a vicks infused card in it. The dampness in the air stops the cough pretty much. Honestly it's a game changer.

SheilaBruce · 09/02/2020 02:55

itsemily, please get it checked out. I had a dry tickly cough that kept me awake for a week or two. No other symptoms at all. I coughed so badly one night that I actually hurt my ribs! After that I went the GP, who took one listen and immediately suspected pneumonia! Shock

After x-rays and blood tests, they discovered that it was only pleurisy, but even that took quite a bit of effort to clear.

Went to urgent care this eve after work and I’ve got bacterial tonsillitis again, been put on more amoxicillin 😖
