To be worries this is DVT?

Maybe the wrong place to post, but posting here for traffic.

I was sent to A&E by my GP 3 days ago for an x-ray due to having a swollen ankle that I couldn't weight bear on, despite not injuring it. Due to the fact there was no trauma, A&E didn't x-ray but they did examine my ankle throughly and said it was Achilles Tendonitis.

The pain in my ankle has got better and the swelling is gone but now I have pain in the calf of the same leg. Its painful to walk and now I'm laying down its throbbing. It started quite suddenly with the calf pain tonight. Feels like a crampy type pain it's just not going.

Just wondered if anyone has experienced DVT and can tell me if I am or am not BU to be slightly worried.

So the pain in your ankle has immobilised you a bit? You need to go to hospital now and get this checked. Are you on the pill? That's a risk factor for DVT.
Go to hospital, explain the pain, ask explicitly to be checked for dvt.

TraumaSaurus · 07/02/2020 23:56

It doesn't matter what we think, please go to A and E and get checked out properly.

Good Luck.

HakunaMatataa · 08/02/2020 00:02

I wouldn't say immobilized me because of my 2 child one has just turned one, but when I do have the time to sit I've been sitting with my leg up.
I've noticed recently I have what looks like a clump if small veins on the back on my knee. They look from a distance like a small black bruise.
I am not on the pill but I do smoke which I've read is a risk factor. Feel stupid going to the hospital if it's nothing.
Probably wise to see how it is tomorrow, and if no better get some advice from 111.

That does sound worrying. Are you pregnant? Have you done any exercise, that could have caused a strain? Did you tell the hospital staff that you thought it might be a blood clot?

I've had DVT. They did a blood test called a d-dimer which helped to establish the diagnosis. Perhaps you could ask for one. Maybe call 111 and see what they say?

DVT is very serious, they told me I could've died if it hadn't been discovered.

I had this too! I asked the hospital consultant about it a few weeks before I had the diagnosis and she dismissed it. I don't know if it was related.

DeadCucumber · 08/02/2020 00:08

Symptoms:
Swelling
Pain
Redness
Warmth to the touch
Worsening leg pain when bending the foot
Leg cramps (especially at night and/or in the calf)
Discoloration of skin

I'd say go to A&E, better to be safe than sorry, DVTs can be fatal.

HakunaMatataa · 08/02/2020 00:14

@PapayaCoconut that's scary! I didnt say to hospital I thought it could be a clot. The pain was very localised to my ankle so I took their diagnosis as Achilles tendonitis. Not sure if the two are related, just very strange that its suddenly gone from my ankle and now I have pain in my leg.
I think I'll go first thing tomorrow if I'm still in pain.

Sorry, not pregnant and have done no excerise that could've caused injury.

I think you should call 111 and they may refer you to an out of hours clinic where you can go tomorrow, or tell you to go to A&E. Do you have anyone to look after your children?

HakunaMatataa · 08/02/2020 00:26

I just done the nhs 111 online thing. Ot said to look after myself at home. My DH is here so he can look after the children if I need to go tomorrow. Thank you! I will ring 111 in the morning if its still painful. Hopefully it's gone by then.

If it's still there tomorrow, please do ask explicitly to be checked for DVT. There are tests they can do, like the d-dimer and ultrasound.

Tomanyhandbags · 08/02/2020 01:06

Please get it checked out, when I had a DVT I left it as put pain in calf down to being post swine flu muscle aches, when I went to GP a week later due to cough and shortness of breath they phoned 999. I was in hospital for a week and off work for 2 months turned out clot had started to break up and I had multiple clots on my lung. Not worth taking a chance on at the end of the day a clot can kill you.

Tomanyhandbags · 08/02/2020 01:08

Meant to say pain in my leg had gone when clot started to break up.

Celticrose · 08/02/2020 01:46

I had one years ago. I had broke my toe and my foot had been strapped. Before I went back to A&E for a check up I developed very severe pain in my calf. Was dosing my self on aspirin. When at the hospital they were concerned for my leg as it was swollen also it was hot to the touch a textbook case apparently. In those days they injected dye into my foot and and took an xray of my leg which showed up a clot. Immediate admission to a ward and spent 7 days on total bedrest plus heparin drip and daily warfarin. Think treatment has changed considerably since then.

I was on the pill and had two weeks previously had been on a long haul flight.

PapayaCoconut · 08/02/2020 02:00

Oh wow, I didn't realise that could happen!!

PapayaCoconut · 08/02/2020 02:01

(That the leg pain could go away with a DVT, I mean.)

Tomanyhandbags · 08/02/2020 03:07

It certainly can happen it's very easy not to realise how serious it can be. Hope all goes well for you and you've just pulled a muscle or similar.

eyemask · 08/02/2020 03:20

Yes you need the d-diner blood test at the very least, it can tell you whether there's a clot present anywhere within a few hours. Measure both of your calf's now.

Finefinedandy · 08/02/2020 03:36

I had superficial clots after the birth of my baby, which are clots in the surface veins. This isn’t as serious.Ring 111,they may send you to a and e now, that’s what they did to me.They measured my legs straight away to check for swelling as this helped them decide if it was superficial or dvt (which usually causes swelling) while waiting for an ultrasound.

Don’t wait - call them now to give the context of your ankle injury.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 08/02/2020 03:36

Measure both your calfs. Sounds like DVT to me. I had DVT in my arm and chest - veins were more prominent on that side, had pain (which then went away).

ravensoaponarope · 08/02/2020 08:09

111 told my niece it wasn't DVT. It was.
Please go to A and E.

spanieleyes · 08/02/2020 08:57

My son went to the GP with a pain in his calf, they immediately called an ambulance and took him straight to hospital, he was in the cardiac care ward for a week and on warfarin for a year, they said he was an hour from a stroke! 20 years old, no risk factors . Don't chance it, go get it checked out.

HakunaMatataa · 08/02/2020 09:08

Thank you everyone. I have measured my calfs and they're the same. There is no redness of the leg. Crampy feeling has gone a bit. More like a dull ache but it's easier to walk today.

OP posts:
HakunaMatataa · 08/02/2020 09:10

@spanieleyes that is so scary! I'm glad they caught it on time!

Go and ask for the test. It's a silent killer
