I’m not a good flier and am going away Sunday afternoon right in the middle of this storm. I’m frightened about it. Any advice please

Or air hosts not being sexist there, just using the common term

Go with Cabin Crew Grin

Hoik · 07/02/2020 20:39

Not me but a family member is cabin crew and it's something I've asked before. Their response was that if the weather was too dangerous to fly in then then plane won't be allowed to take off because "post-crash paperwork is a pain in the fucking arse".

Lightline · 07/02/2020 20:40

@GADDay I’m too anxious to think properly 🙄

If it’s not safe, you won’t fly. Be prepared for delays.

Air hosts 😂 sorry op. Tickled me.

You'll be fine, it'll only fly if it's safe to do so. Driving to the airport will be about 1000x more treacherous

Sherloidbaisherloid · 07/02/2020 20:49

Ex cabin crew here. Don’t worry, if the weather is that bad they won’t be allowed to take off. I’ve flown in storms and high winds plenty of times, planes are designed to withstand a lot! If you can then try and get to check in early or pre book your seat as close to the front of the plane as possible. Turbulence is always worse the further back you are sitting! Please don’t worry you will be absolutely fine Flowers

bottleofbeer · 07/02/2020 20:53

I love a bit of turbulence. Breaks up the monotony.

Lightline · 07/02/2020 20:53

@Sherloidbaisherloid thank you 🙏 🙂

They won’t let you fly if it’s too dangerous, OP. Might be a bit wild on the way up, I guess?

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/02/2020 20:57

It's a flying Faraday cage. Google it. Planes are safe but also cool.

I'm an anxious flyer. Sudoku helps. Weird but true. I also look at the cabin crew when there's turbulence. They always look bored and unbothered. Calms me.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 07/02/2020 21:04

Ex cabin crew here.

Avoid sitting at back of plane, might be a little bumpy on take off and landing but once plane is above the storm it will be fine.

I've landed and taken off in some shocking storms before and still around!! Had a few grumpy passengers that complained about not getting a drink quick enough - they didn't understand the concept of being able to stand up without having to hold on.

At least you know there is a storm and will be prepared for a few bumps - unexpected turbulence can cause a bit of alarm.

If the crew are up and around working as normal and it's bumpy then that's a sign you think it's worse than it is.

Just tell the crew you are a bit nervous.

Runwayqueen · 07/02/2020 21:04

Every aircraft has its wind limits on takeoff and landing, same as the pilots, they'll be trained to certain limits. Once those limits are hit they simply can't attempt a take off, and if they can't guarantee they'll be within limits at the destination or alternative they won't depart.

I'm a nervous flyer despite working at an airport but one thing that has always reassured me is how hard the flight deck and cabin crew train to do their job. Your comfort is important but it always comes down to safety and if they can't guarantee that they just won't do it.

Do keep an eye on your airlines website for updates. I hope it goes smoothly

concernedforthefuture · 07/02/2020 21:08

As someone else has said, the drive to the airport is much riskier than the flight itself. Keep an eye on the cabin crew - if they look calm and happy in their work, then everything is just fine.

Inforthelonghaul · 07/02/2020 21:16

The pilots will check weather carefully before the flight. The flight crew and cabin crew want to get home to their families as much as you want to stay safe and if the weather risk is too severe they won’t fly.

SerenDippitty · 07/02/2020 21:20

Better to be down here wishing you were up there than vice versa.
