To seriously wonder what’s going on

Everything we are reading about Coronavirus says the virus is only dangerous for those with weak immune systems, mortality rate below 2% etc. Then a healthy 33 year old doctor dies? This random fluke just happens to be the man who brought it to international attention? Either the disease is far more dangerous than reported, or this wasn’t a natural death. Either way, these questions should be raised

Its possible the doctor had an underlying condition making him vulnerable. Both myself, my DS and my younger DD all have conditions which make us very vulnerable to flu and similar viruses and we have all been very ill at times.

However, to look at us you wouldn't guess it. I am a runner, my DS plays rugby and my DD netball. We probably look a very fit and healthy bunch.

I am not saying nothing fishy has gone on, however, he may well have had an underlying condition so people shouldn't become too alarmed.

Hoik · 07/02/2020 15:36

He may have had an underlying condition, the Chinese authorities may have taken him out, he may have suffered complications of the illness - even seemingly healthy people are at risk of complications from any number of illness, it's just that underlying condition increase those risks but in every sort of outbreak there will be a small number of young/fit/healthy people who sadly succumb.

I think there is a lot of misinformation spreading and a lot of scaremongering going on in the media which is fuelling anxious feelings for a lot of people.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/02/2020 15:40

How does anyone know they are 'healthy' though- millions of people have undiagnosed health conditions or deficiencies that can lead to weak immune systems. Nobody is immune to death from any illness, to say they are is a falsehood.

Are you suggesting he has been bumped off for leaking info? I hate to break it to you OP but the world isn't a particularly nice place, people are murdered and imprisoned for whistleblowing quite regularly. China, as well as many other countries have a rich history with political prisoners and freedom of speech. It would have been 'brought to international attention' eventually anyway. Supposing everything was a huge conspiracy, what would you imagine would be done about it? Raise questions to whom?

The spread of coronavirus is deeply concerning but also largely confined to the country of origin, likely there are thousands of conspiracy stories online regarding an accurate death toll and cover ups. You and I will quite literally never know either way and certainly won't be affecting change on a highly political very long term issue in one of the worlds most powerful countries. Not sure there is much else to do or say other than to hope that as many as possible recover.

The spread of coronavirus is deeply concerning but also largely confined to the country of origin

In around a week it will have been two weeks since the two York cases were quarantined so if they infected anyone else then those people will have already started showing symptoms or will start at some time in the next week if it's a two week incubation. Every day that passes with no reported person-to-person transmission from either York patient makes me think it isn't going to spread as easily in the UK for whatever reason (not as densely populated? Climate difference? I don't know).

heath48 · 07/02/2020 16:09

The virus is way more dangerous than they are letting on.

Go on Twitter and watch some of the videos coming out of China, they are horrific!!Huge cover up going on by Chinese Government.

Our local hospital now has a pod in the car park for suspected cases. Two Aand E doctors to see any patient suspected of being infected,so two Doctors have to be gowned up and masked each time.

I assume every hospital is having to do this.It went up yesterday.

BrieAndChilli · 07/02/2020 16:21

plus bear in mind that the medical professionals involved in this are working day and night so likely to be exhausted, very run down and weakened so less able to fit off the virus.
He may have had an underlying condition that he wasnt aware of.
Healthy fit people do die from the flu and other illnesses all the time, its less likely than people who are old/young/weak but people do die all the time of things that most people fight of. Theres a lot of factors in play and a virus presents differently in every single person depending on a huge variety of factors.

beanaseireann · 07/02/2020 16:26

I think there is more to this virus.
If it is flu like why all the panic ?
It's not 1918-1920 when so many died of the "Spanish flu", conditions are far better for humans.

Bearfrills · 07/02/2020 16:31

The level of concern is due to it being a new strain of coronavirus which literally no one has any immunity to because we have never encountered it before.

dayowl · 07/02/2020 16:32

As others have said, he may have had an underlying problem

BrieAndChilli · 07/02/2020 17:45

With flu normally a proportion of the population will have immunity as will have been exposed to it in previous years. There are lots of strains of flu but generally some part of the flu will have been around for a while so some of the population will be immune and will not be spreading it around.

When you have a completely new virus no one has an immunity so it infects everyone and everyone also spreads it around.

hennyspennys · 07/02/2020 17:48

He could have had an underlying condition or he could have been rundown with stress and overwork - I doubt China is an easy place to be a doctor at the moment. It's a tough, extremely demanding job at the best of times and even more so now.

Jessica8903 · 07/02/2020 17:52

With many viruses, the greater your exposure, the more serious a case you get.

It’s like with chickenpox - the first child is exposed in passing at school and gets a mild case, but the second child is repeatedly exposed as they interact with their sibling at home, and get it much worse.

As a doctor, conducting an operation on an infected patient, he must have received a much larger viral load.

He may also have had an underlying condition like asthma that we haven’t been made aware of.

Plornish · 07/02/2020 17:53

He may just have been unlucky: I’m an otherwise fit 47 year old, and I was hospitalised with an ear infection and associated facial palsy this summer.

HaudMaDug · 07/02/2020 18:03

We'd be idiots to think there's a chance of getting the actual truth from China. This doctor was the whistle blower so I'd be more inclined to think although he may have contracted coronavirus, he probably did not die from coronavirus.

Jenasaurus · 07/02/2020 19:30

My manager is working from home. When I asked why I was told by his manager that he had a weak chest and doesn’t want to work in the office with the virus around. Now this manager is a very intelligent well respected man and doesn’t normally act in haste or without reason but it’s added to my thoughts about this. If a normally well reasoned logical man is worrying about attending work at the moment it does make me wonder. I am in a medical environment but not patient interfacing.

And I take the point of previous posters. You can look young and healthy but have a hidden health issue which compromises your immunity
