To think ear lobe piercing with a gun really isn't that bad?

Been asking around for local recommendations as my daughter has been begging for years.

And get lots of the "don't go anywhere that uses a gun" replies.

Which I get - I have numerous tattoos and piercings. But my ear lobes were all gun and were all fine (have 6). As are anyone else I've met who has ear lobe piercing.

It's pretty hard to find a piercer who'd needle pierce someone under 13 anyway.

It's a tradition that doesn't damage anyone.

Great pro point Hmm

Shinycat · 07/02/2020 17:32

@AngryAtYouTube A 'piercing gun' to pierce ears is fine. YES even at CLAIRES! Ignore the hysteria.

Although, I agree with the posters saying it's not a great idea to pierce a baby's ears. (Or toddler/infant.) 7-8 years old should be the youngest IMO.

I had mine done for first time age 44 at f hinds jewellers. It wasn’t a gun, a tiny stapler thing barely felt anything nothing like a flu jab. Healed fine.

damnthatanxiety · 07/02/2020 17:47

OP, guns can not be properly sterilised.

They punch a little piece of flesh out. Needles don't. They pierce the skin. Guns have a far higher rate of keloid scarring. Yes, most of the time, a gun piercing will be fine. Most of the time, driving without seatbelts is fine. But why would you take the less good option if you know all this?

SallyWD · 07/02/2020 17:50

My DD had hers done age 9. Everyone said don't use a gun but I couldn't find anywhere locally that did children's ears with a needle. It was done with a gun and healed beautifully. No problems.

SilverySurfer · 07/02/2020 17:52

I agree with smashstore I think piercing babies' ears is horrendous, tradition or not and it looks horrible.

I had mine pierced about 35 years ago with a gun. Not only was it painful, the left one never healed and I got sick of permanently smelling of TCP so let then close. Never bothered since.

A 'piercing gun' to pierce ears is fine. YES even at CLAIRES! Ignore the hysteria.

Claires is regulated under 'retail store' health and safety regulations. Piercing salons are under far FAR stricter regulations.

Claires has no requirement to follow the same sterilisation and cleaning procedures that Tatto/piercing places do. They are also not having their premises checked as frequently.

Shop assistants who handle money frequently price ears without even washing their hands. Piercers at properly regulated places will not only sanitise their hands but will wear single use disposable gloves and operate from frequently cleaned rooms - not just a chair in the corner of the shop.

The risks of transferring disease through piercing is very high at a retail store.

amazedmummy · 07/02/2020 17:54

Oh and my local piercer will pierce ear lobes on children aged 8 and above with parental consent.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 07/02/2020 18:01

Aside from the fact that it is blunt force trauma two major issues with gun

  1. Most important guns can never be sterilised
  2. Professional piercers always tell you to return in a few weeks to check if it’s healing and tell you if there are any issues

Blunt force trauma. Can’t properly sterilise guns. Vile things.

FizzyIce · 07/02/2020 20:01

Guns are massively unhygienic and can never be fully cleaned /sterilised .
The hole guns produce are jagged unlike when it’s pierced with a needle .

FizzyIce · 07/02/2020 20:03

@welshsoph it is true , I used to work at a tattoo/ piercing parlour .
The training our resident piercer went through discussed this

MabelMoo23 · 07/02/2020 20:08

I agree, piercing babies ears is vile and barbaric. Never mind doing something without consent.

And yes I do judge people whose babies have pierced ears. Tradition or not

glitteryboots · 07/02/2020 20:19

You can actually buy a kit yourself of Amazon - completely sterile, takes minutes and doesn't hurt one bit. I let my son do mine and did his for him (he's in his 20s by the way). He's also a wimp and never felt a thing!

Can you do this with a gun?

Come on now, making a hole in your ear will have some level of pain involved.

londonrach · 07/02/2020 20:49

I had mine done via gun, as did my dm, dsis and no problems but tat was the 90s for you

FizzyIce · 07/02/2020 21:13

@welshsoph I didn’t say it was “irrelevant” I said it wasn’t true .
She didn’t tell me anything , I was reading her learning material and I’ve read lots of other information related to hygiene / safety for any type of body /ear piercing because I had to

glitteryboots · 07/02/2020 21:50

smashstore honestly over in seconds - I was really surprised at how painless it was and my son is a wimp!

glitteryboots · 07/02/2020 21:51

Oh and no infection whatsoever.

Dixiechickonhols · 07/02/2020 22:02

There was no pain at all when I had mine done smashstore Nothing like a flu jab, Iv insertion, blood draw. Never had mine done until I was 44 and expected it to hurt a bit.

ActualHornist · 07/02/2020 22:05

Every single person i know and have ever known the past 35 years had them done with a gun

Me too. Aside from my mum who had them done with a needle in the 70s. One was done wonky so she could never wear hoops because it would swing outwards!
