Has anyone managed to get an older baby to take a dummy?

Say 12/13 months old?

Or is it a total impossibility?

OP your child can't use you as a dummy.
A dummy is an artificial item to replace a natural nipple.
Even if you tried to introduce a dummy, which would be bad for their dental health, they would still likely feed to sleep. That's the normality.

Self soothing is a developmental milestone. It cannot be taught. It can be forced by sleep training and night weaning etc.

All babies are different though @NoIDontWatchLoveIsland - my first I spent many miserable months trying to encourage self settling. He just couldn't do it, even with all the shushing and patting in the world, until he was about 18 months. My second is much easier and will go down with just a hand on her chest at 4 months 🤷‍♀️. Nothing I've done differently, just different babies.

I did with my almost 4 year old and I'm sure I'll get flamed but I managed for same reasons as you but not until she was 2. I tried so many times with different dummies but she finally took tommee tippee cherry soothers. And then she had them for about 18 months.
I'm not sure how I would have got her to stop using me as a dummy otherwise. I can't actually remember how I did it though tbh. I remember reading trying to tease with nipple and put dummy in but I dont think that worked for her or feed and then put dummy in. Sorry not much help but it is possible.

I tried with my thumb sucker, but to no avail. I hope you have success though as thumb sucking is the worst. (She has beautiful teeth now though.. beautiful expensive teeth 🙄) Dummies look so cute, try the tapping mentioned upthread , my firstborn loved that.

We used agent dummy’s, although he was 12 months we used 0-6 months. He found the others too big
